Weekend Update: Sectionals, Week 2

by in News, Recap with 2 Comments

All of the Sectionals action continued this weekend around the country, with hundreds of teams vying for spots to Regionals, the next stage of the playoffs. We’ve got all the results in an easy-to-read format. We will update as more scores are reported.

The teams below all have bids to Regionals. They are listed in the order of their finish, along with any notable performances or big upsets.

Next week will wrap up USA Ultimate’s Sectionals tournaments, bringing the first round of the playoffs to a close.

North Carolina

Open
Cash Crop

Queen City Thunder
Highland Chugglers

Notable Performances: Raleigh’s Cash Crop upset local rival Ring of Fire on double game point in the finals, 16-15. That is Ring of Fire’s first loss at Sectionals in the last ten years. That will lock down the two seed for Cash Crop at Regionals; they beat Florida United twice during the regular season. Cash Crop and Ring will likely meet again at Southeast Regionals in the game to go to Nationals.

Notable Perfomances: A lackluster performance from Connecticut’s District 5 — the one seed — left them with the third and final bid to Regionals out of the Metro New York section. They lost to New York’s 7 Express and NYC Mixed on the weekend. 7 Express cruised to the 15-10 victory in the finals.

In other mixed action, The Ghosts (Boston) took down crosstown rival and one seed Slow White 14-9 in the finals of the East New England section. The Ghosts lost twice to Slow White at late August’s Chesapeake Invite.

Notable Performances: Vancouver’s Traffic, after losing to them earlier in the weekend, crushed Seattle’s Riot 13-5 in the finals. This should affect Nationals seeding for the two teams, which both face an easy path through Regionals.

In Open, Seattle’s Sockeye pulled off another victory over Furious George, their big rival from Vancouver, in the finals of the Washington section. Sockeye has now won 14 games straight.

Notable Performances: Coming off of a semifinals performance at Chicago’s Heavyweights, Phoenix’s Sprawl had another strong weekend, winning the So Cal section with a 15-7 victory over LA Renegade after losing to them in pool play. Sprawl has quietly racked up an excellent season with recent losses only to Johnny Bravo and Madison Club. The Southwest Regionals should be an exciting fight for the two bids to Nationals.
