Sound Off: Your Thoughts On The Triple Crown Tour

by in News with 6 Comments

Now that the Club season has come to a close, our attention is beginning to turn to the major changes that face the division next year. With two professional leagues competing for eyeballs and players with USA Ultimate’s Triple Crown Tour, it should be a fascinating offseason.

USA Ultimate spent months getting feedback on their new tiered system, but not a lot of that sentiment was made public. Ultiworld wants to change that. What do you think about the Triple Crown Tour? How will it play from a spectator standpoint? A player standpoint?

Comment below or email us at editor@ultiworld.com to let us know your initial thoughts on the restructure. We will publish the best responses in the coming weeks.

I’m not a big fan of the restructure, too much separation of skill. Just because the teams in the pro division got the top 8 at nationals this year, at just 1 tournament, doesn’t mean they deserve a whole season in a distinct division above teams that are better than them. They should have just restructured the regional bids based on the number of teams competing for the spots from that region and the general quality of the teams that would be making it from that region.

not a fan at all – i agree with clint. wondering if the majority of high level teams are for this?

Sentiment in the room at the club nationals captain meeting seems mostly against. Then again, no need to raise questions and comments is you are for it.

Related: Ultiworld, it would be great to put up a poll asking people about their opinion on the plan. It won’t be representative of the membership but might give a sense of what players think.

I respect the plan for how ambitious it is. From a spectator standpoint, I don’t like the plan, because I have problems watching self-officiated ultimate (even with observers) and ultimate in a tournament format. Also, it seems ridiculous if the USAU wants to seem professional and yet will have teams with names like Truckstop (Gloryhole) and Drag N Thrust. From a player standpoint (though I am not an elite player) I don’t like the plan because it will require teams to travel too much. (At least the AUDL tried to keep teams within driving distance.) I wish the USAU would have just kept doing what they were doing and let the pro league(s) do their own thing. (The club championships have been very entertaining up to and including this year and the NGN coverage has been awesome.) There’s no doubt in my mind that the USAU feels threatened by the pro league(s) and is therefore reacting to try to ensure it keeps the top talent. I can’t say it enough: I love watching refereed ultimate and hope that some pro league survives with a game similar to what the AUDL had/has.

I don’t get why the first commenter is upset by the “new” separation of skill. It’s not like Revolver was playing anything but elite teams (except for sectionals and regionals, but what fun is a 15-4 game for anyone).

I think the restructuring works well, at least for the open teams, because you cannot just throw together a team that would be competitive at nationals. It may be different in the womens and mixed divisions. It seems like every year mixed teams pop up and make it to quarters or better.

I am not sold on the USAU keeping everything exactly the same for all three (non-age restricted) divisions. What are the arguments for/against this.

    Thanks!
