NexGen Thoughts

Here’s my quick initial take on the NexGen proposed pro league: it’s ambitious, fascinating, and probably dead-on-arrival. As Keith pointed out in the comments, 2013 is a Worlds Club Championships qualifying year.

For your team to qualify, you will almost certainly have to play in the Club Championships, which will require participation in the regular season by the top teams (those in the Pro and Elite Flights of the Triple Crown Tour).

The NexGen proposed league does not explicitly say teams could not play in USAU, but, based on its scheduling, it is clearly designed as a replacement, not a supplement. That means teams would have to choose between the TCT and the NexGen league. It seems very unlikely that most, even any, of the 18 teams will forgo an opportunity to play in Italy for a World Championship in what equates to the Champions League for Ultimate.

We will have extensive coverage of the NexGen proposal over the course of this week, with a discussion of the benefits and challenges of the idea and reactions from the club teams who will be making the decision.
