Back for its sixth year, CUT Camps are bigger and better than ever in 2016. With record registrations already in the books, CUT Camps are offering youth ultimate summer camps in three locations this year: Chicago, Raleigh, and, new for 2016, Portland.

“We partnered with Portland Ultimate, which is a wonderful organization,” said Cut Camps director Arnoush “Java” Javaherian. “We got a beautiful campus at Lewis & Clark.”

Javaherian had hoped to launch a west coast camp last year, but demand for the San Francisco-based camp wasn’t quite enough to overcome the high cost of running the camp in the pricey Bay Area. Portland, on the other hand, is already cooking and features an all-star coaching lineup, including Khalif El-Salaam, Claire Desmond, Octavia “Opi” Payne, Jesse Shofner, and Friction Gloves owner Chris Hancock.

CUT Camp will also return to Chicago for its sixth year and Raleigh for its second. Chicago will again offer three camps — two sessions of the regular CUT Camp plus one Cut Camp ELITE for top high school players.

CUT Camp is a week-long overnight ultimate frisbee camp over the summer which teaches every aspect of the game of ultimate for youth players. The directors have created an amazing curriculum which has been worked on for years by their skilled and talented staff. All campers improve their skills in Ultimate dramatically from day 1 to day 6. They incorporate every fundamental skill in the sport and then incorporate the skills into game situations.

Javaherian and the counselors also pride themselves on being able to teach to all different skill levels of ultimate from the beginner to the advanced. They split up the campers into groups based on their skill level so they can teach campers based on their skill level to improve them as a better and faster pace. But all skill groups are also put together on teams so they can play together and continue to improve each other.

With top players like Dylan Freechild, Jon Nethercutt, Payne, Andrew Brown, and Claire Chastain all returning as coaches, you can learn from the best. “I think the coaching staff is at the highest level it’s ever been,” said Javaherian. This year, there are some new perks. Every camper gets a Patagonia jersey, a disc, three meals a day, high quality instruction, evening programs, a stadium game, transportation to/from the airport, and overnight accommodations (for overnight campers). Plus, they get an extra special bonus this year: a Patagonia Black Hole duffel bag!

“Their knowledge of the game is so amazing; I want that to be transferred over to the campers,” he added. “But the other reason is that our sport is at a very critical stage right now. Our youth players are, for the first time ever, becoming fans of the teams that play at the club, professional, and college levels. These campers get to know a Dylan Freechild in person. They get to know an Opi Payne in person. And they become fans of them and their teams.”

Seattle’s Ben Kass-Mullets, who has attended multiple CUT Camps, including the first Elite camp last year, had great things to say. “My experience at CUT Camp was fantastic; it was not only one of the most fun things I’ve ever done but it also improved my skills immensely and helped me in my high school ultimate career back in Seattle.”
