AUDL Rules Update: No More Travel Turnovers, Stall Count +1 On Offensive Fouls

A few meaningful changes to the AUDL rules this season.

The American Ultimate Disc League shield. The American Ultimate Disc League released the updated 2017 rulebook earlier today. While the vast majority of rules remain the same, there have been some substantive updates. Here is a list of the most notable changes:

  • Travels can no longer be turnovers. Instead, all travels — whether initiated by a player considered a receiver or a thrower — will be given a 10 yard penalty. Previously, throwing travels were a turnover while receiving ones were a 10 yard penalty. In practice, however, most AUDL referees were generally assessing yardage penalties, not turnovers.
  • Offensive fouls now yield an increase of one in the stall count instead of a resumption of the stall at the same number (i.e. if the stall is four and an offensive foul is committed, the referee will resume the stall at five). If an offensive foul committed by the thrower occurs after stall six1, “then the disc shall be returned to the thrower and it is an immediate turnover at the spot of the pivot.”
  • The rules now include the following clarification: “A team can never benefit from committing Unsportsmanlike Conduct on a specific play.”
  • The following rule has been added: “If a disc in the air contacts an unusual item that is not part of the field of play and is stationary, then it is a turnover and play resumes where the disc stops or is touched by any player. If a disc in the air contacts an unusual item that is not part of the field of play and is moving, then the disc is sent back to the thrower and the stall count is reset.”
  • The home team must now provide at least seven game discs, instead of five.
  • There are a number of other mostly clerical changes, including that clothing accessories outside of the team uniform can be a “reasonable combination of black, white, grey, or official team colors.”

  1. The stall count is seven in the AUDL
