D-I Women’s Discussion

  • With #1 UC San Diego continuing their dominance at President’s Day, the top of the rankins stay put. UC Santa Barbara enters the Top 5 after a run to the final in La Jolla following their strong SBI in January.
  • The back end of the Top 10 saw a serious shake up, as Tufts, Ohio State, and Wisconsin were the main beneficiaries of the chaos in La Jolla, all moving into the Top 10 while idle.
  • Some surprising and conflicting President’s Day results create a logjam in the middle of the board. #11 Oregon, #12 Cal Poly SLO, #13 Vermont (new to the rankings this week), #14 Colorado, and #15 Western Washington feel like they could be ranked in almost any order as all but SLO landed at least one win and one loss amongst each other in La Jolla. We’ll be excited to see how things shake out at Stanford, but for now consider this a pretty fluid group.
  • Texas was the biggest loser on the weekend, falling thirteen spots to #20 after some tough losses to Minnesota and an understaffed Stanford squad. #21 Northeastern also dropped a bit in their spring debut, managing just a 2-4 record — including a loss to regional rival Vermont — while playing without some key pieces in La Jolla.
  • South Carolina just keep on winning, registering another undefeated tournament weekend and two more shutouts. They are at now at #23 and in a fantastic spot to earn a strength bid for the Atlantic Coast. We can’t wait to see what they look like against some stiffer competition later this spring, but it certainly appears they’ll be fighting for a spot to Nationals.
  • A 1-5 weekend including some lopsided losses dropped Colorado College from the rankings this week to make room for Vermont.

D-I Men’s Discussion

  • With their win at President’s Day over Oregon, Cal Poly SLO climbs into our Top 5 for the first time ever. Ego slides down to #6 while the teams #2 through #4 all notch up a spot.
  • #13 Southern California put in a very solid semifinal performance at President’s Day, falling only to Oregon on the weekend. Were it not for some uneven results in their first tournament of the year, we may be looking at them as a Top 10 squad.
  • Both British Columbia and Colorado had weekends to forget in La Jolla, failing to register a single significant victory between them and losing a host of games to other bubble teams. They fall out of our rankings and may not be able to recover enough to earn strength bids.
  • Taking their place at the back end of the board are new #24 California and #25 Colorado State. Cal battled to a semifinal spot at President’s Day. Hibida was idle, but their results from Santa Barbara have aged well, and they sneak in over a number of squads with up-and-down resumes.

D-III Women’s Power Rankings

D-III Women’s Discussion

  • There are no changes to the D-III women’s Top 25 this week. Only #16 Rice was in action at Big D in little d, but performed to expectations, not doing enough to either move up or move down.
  • Belmont had some impressive results at the First Annual Jillz Jamboree, including wins over a couple D-I schools; they are now firmly on our radar for the back end of the rankings and continued success could land them there sooner than later.

D-III Men’s Power Rankings

D-III Men’s Discussion

  • There are no changes to the D-III men’s Top 25 this week, as no ranked or bubble teams were in action.
