Welcome to Opening Pull, your weekly wrap-up of the previous week in ultimate. We’ve gathered the news you need to know and highlights you need to see, and we’ll let you know what’s coming up in the next week.
New Rules Released by USA Ultimate
For the first time in 12 years, the official USA Ultimate rules are getting an update. USAU released the new 2020-21 rules, which go into effect at the start of the calendar year. There aren’t major chances that might headline a summary, but the changes within include an offside system that doesn’t force a re-pull automatically, the ability of players to overturn some observer rulings, and reducing the penalty for calling a timeout when a team has no timeouts remaining. Many of the new rules align the North American rules with WFDF’s.
D-III Championships Location Announced
Following the announcement of the host location for the 2020 D-I Championships, USA Ultimate has also publicized that the 2020 D-III Championships will be located just outside of Columbus, Ohio, in Obetz, Ohio. The event will take place May 16-17. Columbus hosted the same tournament in 2014, though at a different site.
PUL Advisory Board Features Key Organizations
The Premier Ultimate League announced the formation of a league Advisory Board, comprising individuals from notable ultimate organizations. Along with the leaders of the PUL, representatives from USAU, WFDF, and the AUDL have already engaged in conversations on a wide range of topics. With new teams potentially joining the league, the extra guidance could be very helpful in preparing the league for season two and beyond.
AUDL Postseason Awards Reveal MVP Finalists, All-AUDL Teams

They also announced the league’s All-AUDL First and Second Teams. The champion New York Empire led all teams with three players selected among the fourteen honorees (Ben Jagt on First Team, Jeff Babbitt and Jack Williams on Second Team).
MKBHD Scores Custom Jordans
T-Mobile CEO Jordan Legere apparently thought the Empire’s Marques Brownlee — better known as MKBHD — could use a custom colorway on some new magenta Jordan 1s. The kicks even include an image of a disc.

USA Ultimate Hall of Fame Class of 2019 Nominees
USAU revealed the list of nominees for the 2019 class of Hall of Fame. 15 different individuals are nominated. There are six spots available in the Hall of Fame and the subcommittee is seeking community input on who to select. Their survey is open until September 22nd. Player histories are available on the announcement page if you’d like to learn more about some of the great figures of the game.
