During the spring season, we will publish a bite-sized weekly recap of the action across the college division. Since this is just the fall preseason, we’ll do the best we can to get the key information. This will serve as a supplement to our standard tournament reporting and will offer a high-level look at the latest happenings and the biggest stories of the week.

Women’s

UC San Diego Closes Fall With Sean Ryan Win

The reigning national champions haven’t slowed down yet, running through the field of Sean Ryan undefeated. UC San Diego Dragon Coalition — the team has rebranded, with D-Co as the short — had little trouble dispatching Stanford Superfly in the final with a 10-3 victory. Most of their other competition also fell by large margins. They were, however, pushed pretty hard by UC Davis Rogue in their semifinal match, with a tight 10-8 scoreline. Meanwhile, UC Santa Cruz Sol reached the other semifinal, while Stanford beat Davis in pool play.

Host Georgia Makes Early Claims for Southeast With CCC Crown

The top two seeds at the Classic City Classic, no. 1 Georgia Athena and no. 2 South Carolina Scorch, indeed met in the final. Georgia, led by star sophomore Marie Perivier and a strong surrounding cast, laid waste to the field, winning 14-6 in the final. Despite an impressive zone from South Carolina, which helped them navigate the rest of the field comprised of Southeast clubs, Scorch was rarely able to stifle the lone 2019 Nationals qualifier in the field. Florida State and Alabama represented themselves well on the way to semifinals appearances, positioning them nicely to be competitive in the Southeast.

Men’s

Cal Beats Shorthanded SLO to Win Sean Ryan

Cal UGMO earned the early season win at the most notable west coast fall tournament, defeating Southwest favorite Cal Poly SLO SLOCORE in the final on double game point. SLO was playing with only 11 players, but still reached the final after beating UCSD 13-6 in semifinals. Cal played a lot of close matches during the weekend, showing off a penchant for dramatic endings that they displayed last season. That extended to their 9-7 result over UC Santa Barbara in the semifinals, making for an undefeated weekend.

Brown Claims CCC Over High-Flying UNC Wilmington

The reigning national champions may have graduated the reigning Player of the Year, but they still won the most notable tournament of the fall preseason. Brown Brownian Motion (B-Mo) took a 13-11 win over a surprising UNC Wilmington Seamen crew in the final, aided by strong backfield fundamentals. Their offense was able to take advantage of the aggressive and energetic UNCW side, though the game’s fervor seemed to overtake both teams at points, with chippy calls and brash sideline chatter.

Wilmington, seemingly intent on announcing their return to national prominence after failing to qualify for Nationals in each of the past two seasons, were juiced up, using their deep game to run over opponents. They might be the biggest story coming out of this fall in what appears to be a hyper-competitive Atlantic Coast region.
