D-I Women’s Discussion

  • There were no Top 25 teams in tournament action this weekend, though #19 Northeastern did pick up a win over Dartmouth in an unsanctioned scrimmage to solidify their position in the New England pecking order. The Power Rankings remain unchanged in the final week of the regular season — now the games really count.

D-I Men’s Discussion

  • With 14  ranked squads and several others right on the fringe meeting in Myrtle Beach this past weekend, Easterns had the potential to totally remake the Power Rankings. While there was plenty of movement, things largely conformed to expectations at the very top. Perhaps expectedly, Georgia was the biggest mover this week, rebounding from a brutal SMI with a spectacular performance at Easterns to fly back up the board. NC State joins Jojah as returnees to the Top 10, riding a quarterfinal berth to the #9 spot.
  • Slipping three spots apiece are Cal Poly SLO and Northeastern, both having tough weekends in Myrtle Beach, both losing to Carleton.
  • Speaking of CUT, they are one of a trio of teams that move up three places a bit further down the board. Maryland, Ohio State, and Carleton all move up this week thanks to some very solid performances. All earned some good wins without suffering any bad losses at Easterns.
  • New this week are Utah State, slotting in at #20 thanks to wins over Oregon and UCLA, the latter of whom drop all the way out of the Top 25 after a brutal weekend at Northwest Challenge.
  • The biggest drop of the week belongs to Texas, who couldn’t get anything going in Myrtle Beach, picking up just a single win over Temple en route to a 16th place finish. They plummet eight spots this week, undoing some of the good work they did earlier this spring.

D-III Women’s Discussion

  • SUNY Geneseo may have made themselves Metro East favorites with a one-loss run at Northeast Classic. They add those wins to a 15-10 success against West Chester and some close losses to Lehigh. That boosts them from #23 into the Top 15.
  • A dominating 11-4 win over Richmond put Mary Washington in at #19, roughly taking the Red Hots place. That wasn’t their only nice win at Atlantic Coast open, as they also split with Cornell. They are showing nice growth heading into the postseason.
  • Stonehill enters at the back of the rankings after beating Colby and Bowdoin at New England Open. A 6-2 weekend, with the losses coming against Wellesley and Bowdoin, two top ten teams, earned them some recognition.

D-III Men’s Discussion

  • Colorado College slipped a spot after going just 2-3 at Huck Finn, including a 14-11 loss to UW-Milwaukee. The solid field, however, keeps that record from being too damaging.
  • This week’s biggest movers are the teams on their way out! Wesleyan was just one goal in their final game away from a winless Northeast Classic, with two losses by seven goals each and another pair by four goals each. Brandeis had the opposite record at New England Open, going 6-1, but that one was a 9-6 loss to Bryant. Given the strength of the field, it amounts to a disappointing weekend.
  • That vacuum created some room. Bowdoin, now at 8-1, won all by one of their Northeast Classic games, losing to Yale by a goal. With wins over Wesleyan and UConn, they came away from the tournament with a strengthened resume. Union went undefeated at Magic City Invite, with no team ending a game within fewer than five goals. That type of dominance will get you noticed.

With the regular season now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to assess each team’s spring so far as they head into the postseason. We give a letter grade for their performance to this point of 2022 before they take to the field in Conference tournaments, starting this weekend.
