Club Power Rankings [8/12/22]

A post-US Open update. Plus, a check-in on the early seasons of all 25 ranked Men's team.

Each week, we’ll post an updated edition of our Power Rankings here on the front page to facilitate discussion in the comments and help us share each week’s rankings via social media. The most up-to-date version can always be found on our permanent rankings page.

Men’s Discussion

  • After an early season loss to Virginia Vault had Washington DC Truck Stop languishing in unfamiliar territory outside the Top 10, a bounce-back performance in winning the US Open rockets them back into the Top 5. Fellow semifinalists from Blaine — #6 Denver Johnny Bravo, #8 Boston Dig, and #11 Atlanta Chain Lightning — also see small bumps this week.
  • Chicago Machine were the biggest mover in the other direction this week, as an untimely loss to Chain in the US Open quarterfinals and subsequent consolation loss to Revolver soured what had been a decent start to their season. They fall six spots to #10.
  • A pair of Northwest squads make their 2022 Power Rankings premiere this week as Seattle Emerald City ride an 8th place finish at the US Open to a spot at #18 and bolstered the resume of new #25 Eugene Dark Star, who own a win over their rivals to the North back in June. Idle former back-enders Philadelphia Phantom and Raleigh-Durham United get bumped out to make room.

Mixed Discussion

  • As was the case in Men’s, a traditional East Coast powerhouse program with a head-scratching early season loss earned a US Open title to springboard back up to #5. In Mixed, that team is Philadelphia AMP, who made up for a June loss to New York XIST with a win in Blaine, including a victory over former #5 Minneapolis Drag’n Thrust and a pair of wins over #6 Madison NOISE.
  • Most of the movement this week came in the latter half of the Mixed rankings, as Denver Love Tractor tumble eight spots after a brutal US Open that included losses to two unranked opponents undid a lot of the good work they did at home in the Pro-Elite Challenge last month.
  • Minneapolis No Touching! enjoyed the home cooking of a tournament in their backyard, earning a shock semifinal berth at the US Open and enter the board at #19. Also new this week are #22 Dallas Public Enemy, who finished 10th in Blaine and now have a win over AMP in their credit column.
  • To make space for the newcomers, we wave goodbye — at least for now — to idle Denver Flight Club and San Francisco BW Ultimate.

Women’s Discussion

  • No ranked teams were in action this past weekend, so there are no updates to our Top 25 this week.

While the ultimate community’s attention has largely been focused elsewhere in a summer full of incredible international competition, the domestic 2022 USAU Club Season is somehow already more than two months in. In the wake of the first leg of the Triple Crown Tour, we’re going to take a closer look at how our Top 25 teams have performed in their early season events — and what that could mean looking ahead. We’ll start this week with the Men’s division, with Mixed and Women’s getting the deep dive treatment in the coming weeks.
