Coaches List Their Biggest Pet Peeves

Central Florida coach Andrew Roca.

Michigan MagnUM head coach Tyler Kinley posed a simple question on Twitter yesterday, “Coaches: what are your biggest pet peeves?”

The answers that followed made for some highly entertaining reading. Here’s a collection of some of the best responses.

“1) Not looking at the break-side. Not even a peek. A short gander would do. ? 2) Dancing on the open side or as a reset option. Save that for da clubs. 3) quiet sidelines 4) what do you mean you didn’t bring a dark and a light jersey??” – Frank Nam

“At the start of practice ‘is it scrimmage time yet?'” – USF Ultimate

***

“People not supporting their teammates and blaming problems on others. Not trusting you can get the best from all your personnel. Everyone has a role to play. Honor that.” – Kate Leslie

***

“Me: Please show up at 8:30 to cleat up, get throws in, and b.s around, so we’re ready to go at 9

*checks time, 9 o’clock, looks up*

Majority of team is just now arriving” – Rico

***

“Coaches inserting themselves into calls on the field” – Kevin Bruleigh

***

“Talking in the huddle (even quietly) while a captain or coach is talking” – AJ

***

“‘Hey Java, I don’t think I have my cleats. I think I left them back at the hotel.’ As we pull up to the fields in the morning. #pullmyhairout #thatiswhyimbald” – Java

***

“Watching players bite on dump cuts and getting okie-doked upline. Nobody’s perfect at it but it’s always cringe worthy #noupline” – Jesse

***

“Making an open side cut that doesn’t get open (totally fine) and then slowing down & jogging to clear (NOT REMOTELY FINE)” – Kayla Emrick

***

“Receiving a wide open huck and calling time out without looking to see what is coming up. Telling me you haven’t played for a bit **while** I’m calling subs.” – Adam Goff

***

“Sets of players going perpendicular directions in drills like 3 man marking or partner throwing” – Dan Donovan

***

“This may be buried in the many awesome responses: not clearing out of the way when recycling in a drill, and the icing on that is WALKING while not clearing out of the way…” – DeAnna Ball

***

“Poor marking angles haunt my dreams” – Mike DeNardis

***

“Scenario: Prepping that practice is on ho stack/FM. Every drill focuses on ho stack/FM, starts simple and progresses to more game-like. Maybe you talk for more than you wanted. Last part of practice you put it all together in a scrimmage. Peeve: first team that pulls runs zone.” – Ben Banyas

***

“When people make quiet calls and nobody echoes them and the two players discuss it while everyone runs around for another 30 seconds. #NoSecretFouls” – Keith Raynor

***

“Not adjusting to coaching feedback hands-down, but not bringing a disc to practice or tournaments is close 2nd (that’s a Tabata)” – HH

***

“For me, it’s when people interrupt a defense drill that is working on a specific situation to ask ‘well what if it’s this other situation and the other team is playing a different offense than the one we’re assuming they’re running in this drill?'” – Joaquin Nagle

***

“We run simulated drills, or starts to scrims, the D is supposed to let the O catch it and then mark. The amount of times the defender either A) plays real defense B) Trips up the offense C) Intentionally blocks it is ridiculous. Fastest way to get kicked out of my practice.” – Bryan Jones

***

“On a turn, players behaving as though the object of the game is not to score goals but to achieve the platonic ideal of a stack.” – Jim Veal

***

“wrong shape/type of throw for the cut/window” – Claire Chastain

***

“Taking shortcuts/not risking failure. Hands down the biggest one for me. Trying to stay inside the comfort zone. Where I see it most is when working on D footwork. Too many players are content to try and buffer/anticipate/turn hips early to avoid making more noticeable mistakes” – Kyle Weisbrod

***

“six people sprinting right at their teammate who just caught a huck a few yards shy of the endzone.” – Jody Avirgan
