Growing The Sport

Tiina Booth’s commentary about why she’s bringing back the Ultimate Coaches and Players Conference this year is already sparking some discussion.

Mike Lawler left this comment on our Facebook page:
(1) “Learn how to teach” is easy to say and not so easy to do. Some people will obviously be naturally better at it than others, and folks like Tiina with a teaching background will likely have an easier time learning to coach than someone who hasn’t taught before. Obviously, though, gifted coaches like her are going to be the exception, not the rule. One thing that makes learning to improve your teaching / coaching in ultimate hard is that it isn’t easy to get good and constructive feedback.

(2) Counting paragraph (3) in Tiina’s article, I’ve now seen three comments in the last week about getting more exposure for top level women’s ultimate (the other two related to women’s pro leagues and running a Nexgen-type college women’s team). All three comments have pointed to Michelle.

She’s already doing more work to grow and promote ultimate at a grass roots level than probably the next 10 people you could think of combined. Other people can and need to get involved. Michelle’s contribution to the sport should show people how much one dedicated person can do and serve as an inspiration for others to do something…anything. This week, though, it seems that her work is inspiring people to think that if there is more work to be done, she’s the person who could be doing do more.
