Although some details about USA Ultimate’s deal with ESPN came out in the wake of the announcement last week, there has been almost no discussion of what games ESPN will actually cover at any of the three events — the College Championships, US Open, and National Championships — or even when coverage will begin.
However, poking around Watch ESPN — the online streaming platform that hosts ESPN 3, where ultimate games will be broadcast — uncovers new information. The screenshot below is from the iPad’s WatchESPN app using the search term ‘ultimate.’
As you can see, the semifinals and finals of the College Championships are already scheduled in ESPN’s system. They will stream live from Madison, Wisconsin, from both the Open and Women’s Division.
Later that week on Wednesday, ESPN U, the organization’s college-focused network, will show a highlight show and both finals games in their entirety. This is a long way from the deal with CBS Sports Network, which aired footage months after the tournament had completed.
The US Open and National Championships are not yet scheduled in ESPN’s system.
At press time, USA Ultimate had not responded to a request for comment.
UPDATE (1:00 PM EST): USA Ultimate’s Director of Marketing and Communications Andy Lee confirmed the above reporting.
