Weekend Update: The Series Begins!

2013 USA Ultimate Club Series logo. This weekend marked the start of the Series as dozens of teams converged on their Sectionals tournaments looking to advance to the Regionals round.

With the Pro and Elite Flight teams enjoying an exemption from Sectionals this year, there is little chance for any wild upsets. But some sectionals still offered some exciting matchups on Sunday as teams looked for their final tuneup before Regionals.

Here is a look at the results from this weekend’s Sectionals around the country.

Big finals win for Michigan High Five. After trailing 12-9, they rallied back to take the 14-13 victory and grab a big mental edge heading into Regionals, where they are likely to compete with Columbus Madcow for the second bid to the Club Championships.

Founders (MA)

1. Oakland
2. Dire Wolf
3. Garden State Ultimate
4. Hypnotoad
5. Lancaster
6. Grantham U.

The Pittsburgh teams — Oakland and Dire Wolf — dominated the field at Founders Sectionals as Lancaster (formerly Heva Havas) had a great Saturday followed by a weak Sunday. Expect them to be more dangerous at Regionals. The big question: can Oakland challenge DC Truck Stop at Regionals?

After four tight games with Voodoo a couple weeks ago, Furious blew them out 13-7 in pool play and 13-6 in the finals. Northwest Regionals should be fun to watch.
