Brute Squad 3-0 Molly Brown

This game is a battle between arguably the two best units in the division: Molly’s offense and Brute’s defense. The defense is winning. Three straight breaks to open for Boston.

It’s very windy out here. Tents are blowing over and palm trees are swaying. But for the most part, these players are showing their skill with the disc.

Brute Squad 6-2 Molly Brown

Lien Hoffmann is pretty good. She comes up with a massive layout block to beat Cardenas and Ives to what would have been Molly’s first break of the game. Brute holds a few throws later.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20172:51 pm

Molly Brown defense has looked best when setting a trap on the sideline. If they can transition to that trap every time that Brute Squad swings the disc to the side they’ll be able to recover the disc consistently on D. Probably will see more of this in the second half.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20172:53 pm

Brute Squad’s flicks have been very blady in the wind. Their receivers deserve a lot of credit for collecting those tough passes.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20172:55 pm

Molly Brown has relied on a very disciplined structure offense all weekend. Brute Squad’s defense has disrupted this far more than the teams they have played earlier. Wind is definitely a factor.

Daniel Prentice October 21, 20172:57 pm

Molly Brown 5-7 Brute Squad

It’s not very often that you can criticize Boston’s D-line offense for being inefficient, but they were there. They miss a couple of great break opportunities to take half. Credit to Molly for continuing to battle through wind and offensive miscues.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20172:58 pm

With the jitters gone, Molly Brown offense has looked very effective. They’ll need big plays from their defense to get back in this game.

BS relies on scrappy play and if Molly’s offense after a turn can rise above and play patient, they could claw their way back in.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:00 pm

Molly Brown has not been without chances to take a break against Brute Squad. Brute does a great job of turning the disc over deep in the field so Molly has to work to their limit for a chance at a break.

San Francisco Revolver 13-10 Raleigh Ring of Fire

Depth won the day for San Francisco Revolver, carrying them to at 13-10 semifinal victory over Raleigh Ring of Fire to book a spot in tomorrow’s final.

The flow of the game was close to the script that coach Mike Payne had predicted for Revolver’s Nationals— a first half the might seem tight (Revolver took half 8-6 up one break) but a second half that would see them pull away from unwavering pressure. While not a resounding victory, the capped win saw Ring pull level with San Francisco at 9-9 before San Francisco ran off two breaks (and two holds) to win it 13-10.

The turning point of the game, and the sequence that highlighted the strength of San Francisco’s deep roster, was the marathon point at 10-9. Revolver pulled to Ring and the two teams proceeded to slog out a point that lasted nearly 20 minutes, featuring a timeout by both sides and 4+ turnovers each way. The rhythm of the point fell into a tennis match of Revolver handler Nathan White and Ring handler Jon Nethercutt picking up the disc, seeing their line turn over a deep shot, and running 60 yards to switch places and go back the other way. With both lines visibly exhausted, Revolver finally broke on a hammer from Eli Friedman to Cassidy Rasmussen (extending their lead to 11-9).

The Ring O-line trudged back to their line, with only one or two subs, while Revolver threw out an entirely fresh D-line. On top of that, it featured one of their best throwers in Eli Kerns((their center O-line handler from last year)). The ensuing point was a grind, though not to the extent of it’s predecessor, and the wear began to show on the Ring throwers. At one point, after earning the disc back on a Revolver deep shot, Nethercutt picked up the disc in his endzone and, without walking it up to the line, launched a low backhand huck deep that was promptly caught by Byron Liu, in a clear illustration of the toll the long points were taking on execution and decision making.

After that turn, Kerns went to work with Spear in the backfield and they eventually hit Bryron Liu up line for the second break. The value of their “bench” (though both lines actually play fairly equally) paid dividends. They were content to play the field-position, long huck game on the previous point because of their confidence in their ability to play the next two without any drop off in fitness or skill.

Revolver was able to leverage their depth in two ways. First, they were empowered to throw two unique lines of defenders, without any O-line crossover, that could run and get blocks on Ring’s O-line (not a trivial task). On the turn, their depth of offensively gifted players allowed them to be dynamic in their break conversion efforts, showcasing the technical skill to grind out long points against the talented Ring O-line.

Despite the two semifinalist turning in strikingly similar performances– both showed a willingness to huck in spite of the wind, both played primary 1v1 defense with just a couple of zone points, both had some mental-error turnovers and drops they’d like back– the game was won on the strength of Revolver being able to deploy their entire roster.

Quick Notes:

It was surprising not to see Ring throw out their trapping clam defense again. They played it twice and got decent results from it, forcing a handful of trap side throws from Revolver, and eventually forced a somewhat tight-window hammer into the wind.

Even though the game was played in a cross wind, both teams eventually began to directionally force to the up-wind side of the field. Ring took particular advantage of this near the goal line by throwing floaty, high breaks that sat nicely in the wind to keep their offense from stagnating.

Jon Nethercutt sure can huck the disc. He look effectively untroubled by the wind (as well as the huge mark of Nathan White) as he launch both flick and backhand hucks for Ring holds.

Revolver showed some vulnerability in their resets. When they were on the downwind sideline they put themselves in a tough position by having several players crowding the thrower. The handlers weren’t effectively clearing and the cutters were drifting– and stay– very close to the disc and it led to a handful of turns.

Related, Ring played some impressive handler defense. Matt Gouche-Hanas and Tim McCallister (their matchup for the shifty Ashlin Joye) caught my attention.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:01 pm

Molly Brown’s patience has been incredible this point. This is what they need. They play at a different pace to Brute Squad and if they start to dictate the pace it could shift the entire game.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:03 pm

Claire Chastain has started to play every point. This may have major fatigue implication later in this game.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:04 pm

Brute Squad should keep firing. If they begin to doubt their deep options Molly Brown will be able to pinch in more and play their poachy defense.

Daniel Prentice October 21, 20173:06 pm

The stadium crowd is definitely pro-Molly Brown. Raucous cheering for their goals and blocks and now chants of “Let’s Go Molly Brown” ring out.

Brute Squad 8-6 Molly Brown

Brute Squad is no longer running Molly out of the stadium, but MB just hasn’t been able to fully shift the momentum. A couple of chances to get back to back breaks have come up empty. This one isn’t over yet, but Boston will have a decent cushion to start the second half.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:09 pm

Deep shots work. Lien Hoffman and Brute Squad can rely on their game they’ve played all tournament. They’re up and have incredible depth. Exhausting Molly Brown is a legitimate strategy.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:14 pm

Molly’s throws have been considerably better since the first handful of points. Brute has not had many opportunities to find a block. If Molly offense can hold it’ll put the pressure on Brute Squad O which has had the momentum shift on them.

Orion Burt October 21, 20173:17 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:23 pm

Wind has calmed down slightly. That is definitely in favor of Molly Brown who’s elite offense was slightly less crisp in the wind. It takes longer to develop a rhythm

Brute Squad 9-6 Molly Brown

The wind almost completely dies for Brute on the first point of the half and they get an easy upwind hold. Under 13 minutes to cap now.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:25 pm

Claudia Tajima and Lien Hoffman are both doing the small things right. Capitalizing on defensive lapses and smart cuts if the defense is out of position. Very difficult to stop.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:27 pm

Claire Chastain has been playing downfield most of the game . A distinct transition from her role as the central handler earlier in the season.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:28 pm

Molly Brown trap zone and it works! Exactly as I said. Angela Zhu is a great handler but relies on O/I throws to break free of a zone.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:30 pm

Brute Squad has struggled to contain Liza Minor. Cassie Wong is doing a herculean job against Lisa P.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:32 pm

Despite being unsuccessful in the recent point, Brute Squad defensive handlers should keep firing hucks. It’s discouraging for Molly Brown to have to gain back all that distance every time.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:33 pm

Jesse Shofner is coming up big in this game. Plenty of experience in ‘Big Game Situations’. Mentality is half the battle with these.

Molly Brown 9-10 Brute Squad

Molly offense finally clicking. They’re gonna need an upwind break to win, though.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:42 pm

The lack of a hard cap makes this game so much better. With a hard cap all Brute would have to do is score and play smart time management.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:43 pm

Molly Brown throws an impromptu zone at the endzone and it’s awesome.

Daniel Prentice October 21, 20173:45 pm

Molly defense finally generating turns now that they’re throwing this zone. Their third break chance of the point has them on the right sideline with 30-40 yards to go.

Daniel Prentice October 21, 20173:47 pm

Molly Brown 10-10 Brute Squad

It’s lit

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:47 pm

Molly Brown has brought the game back to their pace. As long as they continue to make Brute Squad uncomfortable they’ve definitely got the momentum.

Having the entire sideline on their side seems to be helping now.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:47 pm

Jesse Shofner’s best quote so far?

Upwind I/O flick into the endzone: “What Wind!!??”

Brute Squad 11-10 Molly Brown

Brute able to flip the field with a clean hold. Game point for Boston.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:50 pm

Brute Squad are finally sliding throws through the margins again. Molly’s bids are something else though. The second half has been night and day from the first.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:51 pm

That’s the second time a Liza Minor block has been recovered by a Brute Player because she did not catch the D.

Brute Squad 12-10 Molly Brown

That’s game. Brutal ending for Molly after clawing their way back.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20173:53 pm

Molly Brown played the better second half. Heartbreaking loss.

Props to Brute Squad for regaining their composure and coming through when it mattered most. They’re headed to the finals for the 3rd time in 3 years. We know how the last two ended.

Boston Brute Squad 12-10 Denver Molly Brown

Brute Squad will play in the national final for the third successive year after beating Molly Brown in semis for the third successive year. This season, though, Molly put up their best challenge yet, of the defending champions, with Brute having to hang on for dear life for the 12-10 win.

In the beginning stages, however, the game looked like it would be an absolute smack down. Brute broke on the first three points of the game and then held a 5-1 lead and it looked like the game would resemble the 2015 semis matchup between the two than the 2016 rendition of the rivalry.

Molly was able to dig themselves out of the initial hole with improved defensive effort, and better efficiency on converting Brute’s unforced errors into breaks. They scored five of the next seven points to make it 6-7. But they also missed a couple of opportunities to take advantage when they did flip the field for the downwind advantage.

Missing an opportunity to break for 7-7 was especially costly. Brute held out of half for 9-6, and in that moment it felt like the game was over. It didn’t help that the first half featured a lot of long points. At the 9-6 mark, there were less than 14 minutes remaining to cap.

But Molly Brown had one surge left in the tank. Their top players were on the line for every point and they played their best defense of the weekend — and per Brute Squad head coach Ariel Jackson, the best defense Brute has faced all weekend — and they rallied back to level things up at 10-10.

At that point, it felt like Molly would go into win. Brute needed to hold upwind to hang on, and Molly had all of the momentum as well as the support of a very vocal crowd. But Molly’s earlier issues returned at the worst time. They were unable to create any real pressure as Brute worked it up into the wind, and when it was their turn to hold upwind and forced double game point, their errors in the wind returned as well.

An unforced error gave Brute a short field to break for the win, and then Liza Minor, popped up a sure Brute turn into the air for a laying out Lauren Sadler to save the possession. Boston finished off the break chances a couple of throws later.

Boston was better in the game’s decisive moments and that was the difference. That isn’t really surprising; Brute’s ruthlessness has been their trademark for the last two seasons. But Molly played the better half in the second half, and if they had won another moment or two in the first half, or not played so poorly in the game’s first three points, Molly likely would have unseated the defending champs in this game, rather than adding to the narrative of Brute owning Molly in semifinals at Nationals.

San Francisco Fury 15 – 5 Atlanta Ozone

San Francisco Fury continued their dominant run in Sarasota with a 15-5 win over Ozone. There wasn’t a minute of the game when Fury wasn’t in control. They broke three times to open the game, and they would roll to an 8-3 half. Ozone couldn’t find their footing in today’s wind and against Fury’s close person defense. Between drops in the wind and active Fury blocks, Atlanta couldn’t advance the disc in either direction. And on a turn, Fury was near perfect to convert.

Fury’s Alex Snyder, Nancy Sun, and Carolyn Finney were visions in the backfield for Fury. Ozone couldn’t prevent their backhand breaks, and they utilized the field’s full width to advance the disc with ease.

On defense, Fury set flat marks on Ozone’s key shooters, which forced Paula Seville, Katherine Wooten, and India Stubbs to holster deep shots and throw too wide in the wind. Without access to their deep game, they couldn’t assert themselves.

“I think the first [thing] was to make sure that their handlers did not catch the disc upfield and I think we did a really good job of that,” said Fury coach Matty Tsang. “We played a lot of straight up to prevent those throws.”

The wind pulled a few discs out of Ozone’s reach several times, while Fury’s throws – from handlers and cutters alike – were unaffected by the gusting wind. Fury would break twice again out of half to build their lead to 10-3.

“Fury’s throwers top to bottom are so skilled,” said Paula Seville after the game. “And they really used the width of the field well, and we had trouble stopping that. We were always on our heels, the whole game.”

The game was essentially over, yet Ozone rallied on. They ramped up their defense in the second half to contest Fury’s under lanes, and they created momentum on the turn enough to score twice in the second half.

It wasn’t enough. Fury broke twice to end the game and advance through astounding offense from Snyder and Claire Desmond. Fury has looked like the best offensive team this weekend, and they’ll have the chance to continue the trend tomorrow in the finals. As for Ozone, they still get to attend WUCC next year, and they’ve broken their semifinals dry spell.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:15 pm

Carolyn Normile is a throwing genius. Great field awareness.

Orion Burt October 21, 20176:16 pm

Orion Burt October 21, 20176:16 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:17 pm

BFG players on the sideline giving mad props to every great play AMP makes. Game respects Game.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:21 pm

AMP are hucking. Mixtape are watching from the sideline. Probably whispering “That’s what we do!”

Orion Burt October 21, 20176:21 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:23 pm

If BFG is going to come back and win this game they need to knock AMP down a level. AMP is riding the high of sick blocks and amazing catches. BFG need to show them their mortality. Have to make big plays of their own.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:24 pm

I find it humorous that both teams are initialized and I have to capitalize it every time for fear of the interwebs correcting me if I write in lowercase

Charlie Eisenhood October 21, 20176:25 pm

FYI: The Fury v. Ozone semifinal is available now for subscribers.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:25 pm

Still waiting for the AMP trusttheprocess cheer. It’s such low hanging fruit and would make me really happy.

Charlie Eisenhood October 21, 20176:29 pm

I’m taking questions for tonight’s mailbag — ask on Twitter (ceisenhood) or email (charlieultiworld.com)!

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:30 pm

Worth noting that there was a warning of rain all throughout today and nothing came of it.

SMH. Even Mother Nature is distracted reading our liveblogs.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:36 pm

We’re back. Great D from Tommy Li!

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:39 pm

AMP were a little cocky coming out of half and BFG is taking advantage of that

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:41 pm

Both teams are playing great Ultimate. AMP has just capitalized better on BFG’s mistakes.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:42 pm

Worth noting, very clean game. Almost no calls. Good spirit.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:44 pm

Pulls have been much better to start the second half.

Have we talked about Tommy Li earlier this weekend? Feels like we should be talking about Tommy Li more.

Orion Burt October 21, 20176:47 pm

Charlie Eisenhood October 21, 20176:50 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:50 pm

Both teams have not had to cheer too much because the sideline has does it for them. In the second half the supporter cheers have been less = more sideline cheers.

Orion Burt October 21, 20176:51 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:52 pm

Patrol has great cheers. I can only assume that they are the same cheers sung at an Eagles game because they are well rehearsed.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:56 pm

BFG has decided they’re a hucking team. Who am I to argue?

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20176:57 pm

Tommy Li has figured out his pulls. Also has great pulling form. Worth studying. Puts his whole body into it.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20177:00 pm

AMP plays with four women and use them as handlers, it may be worth them time to send them deep and huck it to them. They’re incredibly fast.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20177:05 pm

BFG has slowed the game down to their pace. It’s good for them. Still a bit huck happy.

Orion Burt October 21, 20177:05 pm

Charlie Eisenhood October 21, 20177:06 pm

A beautiful sequence of photos from UltiPhotos’ Paul Rutherford showing the game winning Callahan from Revolver’s Jordan Marcy in today’s semifinal!

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20177:08 pm

Cap will go off soon. BFG slowing down the pace no longer seems like it’s a good idea. Advantage rests solely in AMP’s favor now.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20177:10 pm

AMP has really proven the depth of their roster. So many players making great plays. BFG should be given credit for hanging so tight with them despite what the score may suggest

Orion Burt October 21, 20177:11 pm

Orion Burt October 21, 20177:17 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20177:17 pm

I’d like to talk more about how impressive it is that AMP runs their offense through their women.
But I won’t. You’ll just have to see it to understand how great it is.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20177:22 pm

BFG has had great success with zone defense to slow AMP but not stop them. Their person defense has also done a good job of stopping the AMP men.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20177:29 pm

AMP is playing for the game. Still running four ladies. BFG has opted to stick to their strengths and not try anything too wild to disrupt the offense

AMP v. BFG = done! key

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:05 pm

We’re back! And here to give you the scorching hottest of takes from the Mixtape – Slow White game. It’s a good thing there are no flame emojis on the livewire otherwise this post would be littered with them

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:07 pm

The air is thick with anticipation. Both these teams know it will take everything to beat each other.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:09 pm

Mark Burton plays like he doesn’t have a defender in front of him.

Charlie Eisenhood October 21, 20178:10 pm

There are only about 150 people in the stands to watch this nightcap game. No atmosphere. Surely disappointing for USA Ultimate.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:10 pm

Slow White appears to favor iso cutting from a Ho stack to gain yardage early. It’s working.

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:11 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:13 pm

Slow white has throw two hammers and a scoober in the first two points. Statement plays early on. Mixtape knows they have to respect high release throws now. Makes marking much tougher.

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:15 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:16 pm

Mixtape has great sideline communication.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:17 pm

Slow White does not hold to their structure for too long. As a result there are a lot of picks.

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:20 pm

Tape delayed Truck Stop v. Doublewide semifinal is now available for Full/Plus Plan subscribers: https://ultiworld.vhx.tv/club-championships-2017-men-s-mixed-women-s/videos/club-nationals-2017-truck-stop-v-doublewide-m-semifinal

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:20 pm

I’m a big fan of the large noticeable names on the back of Slow White’s jersey. As someone who’s not from the East Coast, I can attest it’s much easier to track who’s making great plays.

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:22 pm

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:22 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:24 pm

Mixtape defense looks great on O too. They won’t get many chances so they need to convert when they can.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:26 pm

Mixtape has very aggressive defense but Slow White is undeterred. Not a large amount of wind so this game will probably be won by inches

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:27 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:28 pm

Mixtape plays at a much more frenetic pace than Slow White. It makes it seem as if every throw is potentially a turnover but it never really is.

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:28 pm

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:28 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:32 pm

Mixtape plays ‘games to three’ inside of each actual game. Achievable goals to work towards. Big fan.

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:34 pm

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:34 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:35 pm

Mixtape is hucking less than they have in pool play, but the throws that they are launching are being caught. Very disciplined in comparison

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:37 pm

I thought AMP played at a lightning pace last game but Mixtape is matching that and adding their own flair. Mixtape looks urgent to end this game.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:37 pm

Apparently ‘Urgency’ is a buzz word for Cam Bailey so I’m glad our thoughts align.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:38 pm

Mixtape has a sideline infringement called against them. Slow white has a TMF for dangerous bids. In both instances I’ve seen dirtier at the tournament. USAU is probably holding them to a high standard since it’s televised.

Charlie Eisenhood October 21, 20178:40 pm

AMP’s Anna Thompson throws a backhand past BFG’s Kate Kingery in their semifinals win.

Orion Burt October 21, 20178:41 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:45 pm

Mixtape’s women are bullying the Slow White women. Not in a bad way necessarily, they’re just clearly being physical and aggressive in their attempt to get the disc.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:47 pm

Standout players so far: Evan Klein, Mark Burton, Ari Lozano, Tommy Ferguson, Alex Trahey, Vicki Chang, Abbie Abramovich. So the regular standouts.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:52 pm

It’s halftime and the two teams are practicing throws. Slow White is practicing high release backhand breaks and Mixtape is hucking. Pretty much how this game has played out so far.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:54 pm

Music choice at the fields has been… Interesting. Cannot tell what type of style they are going for. I’m guessing the playlist is called ‘Jumping music’.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:55 pm

Mixtape’s D line is intimidating. Slow White’s O line has won a medal though, so I guess they’re probably not intimidated.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20178:58 pm

I have a confession.

I think either of these teams would provide a great contest for AMP. We live in exciting times.

Orion Burt October 21, 20179:03 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20179:05 pm

First huck I’ve seen from a Mixtape woman. It was great but an even better D from Slow White. I hope this does not discourage their hucks

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20179:11 pm

Salaam has pulled really well tonight. Not too much else from him so far but after his game yesterday no one is questioning his ability to take over a game.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20179:13 pm

Some great drumming from the stands to create intensity. Good rhythm.

Orion Burt October 21, 20179:13 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20179:18 pm

This point could be make of break for Slow White.

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20179:18 pm

Mixtape really should launch it.

And they do

Orion Burt October 21, 20179:20 pm

Orion Burt October 21, 20179:22 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20179:23 pm

Slow White’s women are very good. Actually, they deserve a better adjective, magnificent.

At times they seem to fade into the game as they are not utilized as much as their men but every so often they show why they can never be counted out.

Orion Burt October 21, 20179:27 pm

Graham Gerhart October 21, 20179:27 pm

First offside call I’ve seen so far. Most teams have played fairly honestly with that. I do not think it’s intentional with Mixtape. They’re just eager.
