Good morning from Sarasota! Weather report 30 minutes before the Men’s Final between Revolver and Doublewide: high in the upper 70s, partly cloudy, moderate wind 8-10mph. Highs expected around 90 degrees, wind to pick up to 10-15 mph.

Some morning reading:

Finals preview!

– The story of Doublewide’s new-look team five years after their first Championship (over Revolver…in Sarasota).

– Revolver’s depth slowly sapped Ring’s life in semis.

– Doublewide scored eight unanswered to end Truck’s run.

What a classic memory from 2012 finals! Dalton Smith, then a rookie on Doublewide, got a layout D on the very first point. It was my first year reporting on Club Nationals. Here’s the recap from the final for those interested.

Warmups done. Anthem done. Revolver v. Doublewide about to start. key

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:05 am

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:10 am

Some early nerves? Doublewide drop and Revolver punish immediately. Not quite the dream start from 2012.

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:13 am

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:14 am

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:14 am

Brutal start for Jay Froude. His 2nd drop.

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:14 am

This is not exactly insightful, but…Doublewide needs guys like Jay Froude to come down with those jump balls if they want to have any chance in this game.

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:16 am

In the first two points, the Revolver force was flat. Doublewide had to move the disc laterally more often than they’d like.

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:22 am

Revolver was cheering “Yes Nate! Yes Nate!” the moment that Doublewide popped a disc high. It was contestable but Nathan White’s height advantage has been a problem for Doublewide so far.

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:23 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:24 am

Doublewide has been very reliant on their handler core to generate movement on the field. The defensive pressure by Revolver downfield has prevented most under cuts from remaining open for very long.

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:25 am

Just a reminder that Revolver has only been broken five times in five games this weekend. Is Doublewide going to even be able to get their defense on the field?

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:26 am

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:26 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:27 am

Doublewide was down against Truck Stop yesterday and had an incredible string of breaks to take the game. First they need to get their defense on the field.

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:28 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:29 am

On the first two points, Revolver proved that they would come down with almost all contestable hucks. Ever since then Doublewide has been hesitant to huck the disc, and when they have it’s been overthrown to keep it from the hands of a Revolver defender.

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201710:29 am

George Stubbs looks like he’s finally back. Ran Dalton Smith ragged after the turnover.

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:30 am

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:30 am

This is ugly

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:33 am

Kaplan Maurer has been putting in work for Doublewide downfield. Revolver hasn’t been able to smother him as they are doing with other Doublewide cutters.

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201710:35 am

Much better patience out of Doublewide’s handler set there, and the resets were actually available.

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:36 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:36 am

Matt Bennett decided to take control in that point and marshaled Doublewide to their first point. He still struggled to get open on resets. Revolver has had great positioning on handler defense this game.

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201710:37 am

Can we get a “longest pull” competition going? I think Matt Bennett has a shot to win it.

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:39 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:40 am

Schlachet scores with the same ‘quick turn on the endzone line’ that he’s been using all year. He’s really making a name for himself with that play and yet defenders still struggle to turn in time.

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:41 am

Pretty nice opening O-point for Revolver. Doublewide will need at least five breaks to win the game. Again, Revolver’s only given up five all weekend.

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:43 am

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:43 am

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201710:43 am

“CUT RULES” echoes from the sideline as Grant Lindsley hits Justin Lim. Revolver’s offense feels so relaxed and unhurried. Doublewide just seems frantic.

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:45 am

Revolver’s zone is so effective with Nathan White as the mark. He’s also an immediate deep threat if there’s a turn, even though he generally plays in a handler role.

Orion Burt October 22, 201710:47 am

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201710:47 am

Greg Cohen gets UP for that block, but never ceded position to Kai Marshall on that Malacek huck. Excellent positioning and timing get the D against a much taller cutter.

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:48 am

8-2 at half.

Revolver/Ring was the actual final.

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:48 am

Greg Cohen has not had the height advantage as the Deep in Revolver’s zones but his vertical jump more than makes up for it.

There’s something to be said for a strong vertical trumping height. If you are accelerating up for a disc it’s much easier to knock it aside than simply reaching for it with height.

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201710:51 am

It’s worth noting, Revolver has no reason to ‘blow up’ their team. No one appears to be moving out of the city and this core could remain for the next 2+ years without much turnover.

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201710:55 am

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201711:05 am

Everything broke right for Doublewide yesterday v. Truck Stop. It’s completely the opposite today.

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:06 am

Doublewide has started to play much better with reset defense. Both teams are making it difficult for handlers to adjust.

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201711:10 am

Windows of opportunity are so small for Doublewide, and they just aren’t precise enough to exploit them. Meanwhile, Eli Kerns shows some brilliant footwork to land inbounds at the back of the end zone. Thought that was going to sail OB.

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:11 am

Revolver’s structured defensive units (D1, D2 etc.) really are possible because the team plays far more defensive points than their competition. In this game alone they’ve only had to play three points with their offensive line.

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201711:11 am

Is it good for the game to have a team that is this stacked?

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201711:12 am

Bay Area teams loading up and ruining it for the rest of us.

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201711:14 am

Shoutout to Rory Orloff for catching the goal and giving a completely unnecessary bump to Nick Stuart immediately afterwards.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:16 am

3rd place game between Ring of Fire v. Truck Stop in the books. key

This means the third men’s WUCC 2018 bid will go to Raleigh Ring of Fire. We’ll have the gametape available for Full/Plus subscribers later this week (after some post-production).

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:16 am

Revolver’s offensive line really relies on home-grown talent. Many of their ‘imports’ play defense. Perhaps this is why Goose Helton did not make their team? An offensive-minded player that wasn’t already comfortable in their offense couldn’t contribute as much.

Even George Stubbs played D line on his first year.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:17 am

Charlie Eisenhood October 22, 201711:17 am

Hard to see this in this game, but Matt Bennett has had a great tournament. You see the creativity with the scoober there, but he’s reeled in his turnovers a ton from his college days. He has the makings of a mainstay handler in the Club Division.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:17 am

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:18 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:18 am

Matt Bennett is a fantastic Puller. Of the top 5 we’ve seen all weekend.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:18 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:19 am

Doublewide players are still pumped to get on the field. They’re all angsty to prove that they’re better than the score suggests.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:19 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:19 am

Matt Bennett throwing scoobers again is exactly what Doublewide needs in this game. A little swagger to keep Revolver honest on defense.

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201711:21 am

Doublewide still getting after it on D. Great mark from Jay Froude to deny any resets for Tom Doi

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:23 am

Reset defense. Brilliant from both teams. Revolver boosts the disc to get it out from Doublewide’s suppressive trap set.

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:25 am

Joel Schlachet makes the simplest of upline cuts. He just does it far faster than his mark can keep pace with. Doublewide did nothing wrong on that defensive play. Schlachet is just very good at endzone offense.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:26 am

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:26 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:27 am

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:30 am

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201711:30 am

Beau sighting! He’s been waiting in the wings for much of the game, but comes on for this upcoming Revolver offensive point.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:33 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:33 am

Doublewide have nothing to lose and everything to gain from testing out different defensive looks against a Revolver O line. It didn’t work in their previous game this tournament but circumstances have changed.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:34 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:36 am

Barring injuries next season, what’s stopping Revolver from rolling through Nationals again? Another year together will not lead to any offensive regression and that was the only ‘weakness’ to their game that people identified. A weakness that has not been present for the past 4 days.

Colin Clauset Colin Clauset October 22, 201711:36 am

The ‘intensity’ part of IHD really coming out for Revolver. Fighting for every point like they are down several breaks.

Orion Burt October 22, 201711:37 am

Graham Gerhart October 22, 201711:38 am

One unsure pass upwind is all a Revolver defense needs to gain the break.

Brute allowed themselves to take on more pressure by holding the disc too long. Looked off the short gain for a better pass and in doing so had far more high stall hucks in the second half than they did in the first. Worth considering.
