As part of our larger offseason effort to increase transparency and lay the groundwork for a more diverse team at every level, Ultiworld’s site now includes an Equity Statement as well as Pitch Guidelines for potential contributors.
Ultiworld strives to be the leading news source for disc sports, and as such, we believe it is both a moral imperative as a company and necessary to the quality of our coverage to include truly diverse voices in our core staff of editors, writers, and media creators, as well as in the content we publish from other contributors. Working towards that goal requires ongoing commitment to principles of equity and inclusion in our journalism and business practices; by adding these pages to the site, we hope to take one step in that process by lowering barriers to entry for getting involved, as well as making those principles clear as a central part of our mission.
To that end, the Equity Statement elaborates on that commitment and the steps we’re taking to make related work visible, while the Pitch Guidelines provide information on how to submit work, our editorial process, and compensation for contributors. Both can be found in the informational links at the footer of every page on the site.
Along with these, we have also publicly posted our in-house Style Guide, accessible from the Pitch Guidelines. This living document describes the language and grammatical choices Ultiworld has made to build a consistent voice and format for our coverage, with sport-specific standards on subjects like field space terminology or describing teams consistently within divisions, as well as guidelines for inclusive language in ultimate writing. By making it public, we hope to provide a helpful resource for writers interested in working with the site and a standard for language in our sport that is both clear and respectful.
The Equity Statement, Pitch Guidelines, and Style Guide were developed by Ultiworld’s core editorial team of Charlie Eisenhood, Keith Raynor, Steve Sullivan, Ravi Vasudevan, Mags Colvett, and Zoe Collins Rath. We welcome feedback at [email protected].
