Some hot starts have cooled off, allowing the cream to rise.

Welcome to Better Box Score Metrics, our analytics column focused primarily on semi-pro statistics and discovering new ways to use data to explore ultimate. It is anchored by EDGE, which we can summarize as converting goals, assists, blocks, turnovers, and yards gained into one metric, while accounting for the scoring and turnover environment.
You might think that a game in which the two teams went for a combined 19 of 21 on huck attempts would produce some impressive individual stat lines. And you would be right.
- Tobe Decraene, Orion Cable, and Ben Sadok for Boston, and Tom Blasman, Arvids Karklins, and James Lewis for Toronto, all generated top 15 Week 8 game performances in Boston’s 26-23 high-flying victory (Table 1).
- Decraene in fact registered the highest EDGE score of the year (6.99), topping the mark Christophe Tremblay-Joncas set just last week.
- Such was the offensive potency in this match that every tenth pass for Toronto was a goal. (In the role of antithesis, the DC Breeze did not disappoint, averaging 21 passes for every goal in their wild 2-OT loss to New York.)
- James Lewis has become one of the most reliable cutters in the league, landing in the top 20 for the third consecutive week.
- Toronto vs. Boston was far from the only scoreboard scorcher this weekend; 6 teams scored at least 25 goals. Chicago was one of them, and the combo of Nate Goff and Daan DeMarrée accounted for more than a third of Chicago’s net offensive production, landing both in the top 5 of the E+ leaderboard.
