How big were Walker Frankenberg's eye-popping numbers???
July 2, 2025 by Paul Würtztack in Analysis

Welcome to Better Box Score Metrics, our analytics column focused primarily on semi-pro statistics and discovering new ways to use data to explore ultimate. It is anchored by EDGE, which we can summarize as converting goals, assists, blocks, turnovers, and yards gained into one metric, while accounting for the scoring and turnover environment.
In 2024, Ben Lewis, Brett Hulsmeyer, Alex Atkins, and Max Gibson registered single-game EDGE scores over 7.0, with Lewis’s 7.44 in the opening weekend the highest of the season. Nobody had reached the 7.0 plateau in 2025 until Walker Frankenberg did it this weekend, except he didn’t stop at 7. His 1008/12/0/1 stat line (Y/S/B/T) produced a 8.16 EDGE against division leader Salt Lake that was the highest since Jonathan Nethercutt’s 8.60 in 2022 (Table 1). His E+ game rating of 193 is also the highest we’ve recorded in the first year of using this metric. For good measure, Frankenberg followed up that performance with a 4.59 EDGE game against San Diego, buffing up an already strong resumé for 2025 honors, as we’ll see below.
Speaking of strong resumés, Allan Laviolette has posted a Top 10 performance in each of the last four games he’s played, and Week 10’s was the best so far. Fellow South shooter Austin Taylor had almost 400 total yards in the win over Austin, which seems somewhat modest by his standards until you remember that the game was stopped at half due to weather.1 Given that he only had 13 possessions, only Frankenberg had a higher E16 rate metric.
We haven’t done it yet, be we intend to adjust 2025 “per game” stats to account for shortened games. ↩
