Alas, the start of another year. There’s a reason we call it “Dry January” and not “Healthy January” that goes beyond the phrase’s harmonic alliteration. It’s because with every turning point comes a sense of emptiness for what will never be recovered. We become deserts. Janus, for whom the month is named, famously looks both forwards and backwards. The anticipation is tinged with mourning, or at least the first green shoots of nostalgia. It’s why the “Outs” sections of the annual “Ins and Outs” cultural pieces and personal manifestos never quite feel as triumphant as authors would make them out to be. Those “outs” were once “ins” in somebody’s life.
And January brings a new season of college ultimate while simultaneously feeling like an official closing of the books on the last one. It is an occasion for hope, and an occasion to reflect with somber appreciation on what we shall miss. Here are several specifics from the past that, with no future in college ultimate, must content themselves with a place in our memory.
