Just how massive was the new Indy star's opening game?
June 5, 2026 by Paul Würtztack in Analysis

Welcome to Better Box Scores’ coverage of the semi-pro seasons. It is anchored by EDGE, which converts goals, assists, blocks, turnovers, and yards gained into one metric, while accounting for the scoring and turnover environment.
This year, we have been presenting our box scores without commentary, but Elliot Hawkins’ outrageous 1174 yard, 15 assist performance against Chicago is bound to raise the question as to whether that’s a new EDGE record, so we’ll answer it.
Amazingly, it is not, although it could hardly be closer. If we go all the way back to 2021, the first year of EDGE stats, Ottawa’s Nick Boucher had a very similar game against Toronto in which he went 10 for 10 on hucks while generating 1223 yards (888 throwing), 11 assists, 2 goals, a block and two turns. Using the yardage and scoring coefficients of the current season for both players, Boucher’s EDGE score of 9.93 ever-so-slightly outpaces Hawkins’s 9.88, ultimately on account of the lower cost of Boucher’s one net turnover.
But since that game 5 years ago, Hawkins’s game is tops, far outpacing Jonathan Nethercutt’s 8.60 in 2022 and Daan De Marée’s 8.53 last year. For context, a 3.3 EDGE would be in the 93rd percentile off all EDGE scores; Hawkins’s game was three times better than that.
