EWelcome to Better Box Scores’ coverage of the semi-pro seasons. It is anchored by EDGE, which converts goals, assists, blocks, turnovers, and yards gained into one metric, while accounting for the scoring and turnover environment.
Elliot Hawkins, my goodness. Hawkins closed out the regular season with another gem, an 8.67 EDGE and a GameRater score of 190 (Table 1). It’s the second best single-player performance of the year, trailing only a Week 6 masterpiece by… Elliot Hawkins. One can say “yeah, but” given that they were against Pittsburgh and Chicago, but most everyone has played against generous opponents without coming close to these stat lines.
Elsewhere on the weekend, Kyle Henke had a pair of top 10 performances to wrap up an MVP-level regular season, while five different Spiders joined the leaderboard, led by Raekwon Adkins and Daniel Ritthaler at 2nd and 3rd. Justin Podnar and Max Gibson beefed up their BreakGenerRater resumés (Table 5) with stand-out D-line games.
Since Hawkins has forced the issue, we’re offering a look at the top 20 GameRater performances of the year in Table 2. Hawkins is one of 5 players with a pair of them joined by Alex Atkins, Ritthaler, Tobe Decraene, and Max Pettenuzzo. Among them, in some configuration, we may have the MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and—if the UFA gave such an award—Breakout Player of the Year.
One name not on that Table 2 list is Henke. While he did not make a splashy headline any particular week, through consistent productivity—including three games with a 5+ EDGE—he finished the regular season second in total EDGE, only behind Atkins (Table 4). In our view, Atkins is the clear regular-season MVP, with quite a bit of daylight between himself and the rest of the field. Hawkins is 3rd despite only playing in 9 games, followed by Decraene and Garrett Martin, another player like Henke who just quietly excelled week in and week out.
