Who made the top 25?

The World Ultimate Club Championships will take place in Limerick, starting Saturday, August 15. The tournament is in Europe, there will be dozens of European teams taking part, and thousands of European players will be competing at the event. But who among them is the best?
Last time these lists were compiled, it was as two match-gendered groups. This time, each division gets its own. Since the last version, the mixed division has undergone some changes. GRUT are now gone, the players thriving in single-gender competition, and have been replaced as a title contender by regular season power Tiefseetaucher1. Mosquitos have ridden a wave of development and taken the seat at the top of the continent away from two-time champions Deep Space. Tartu Turbulence also emerged as a power, while others like Reading, Disconnection and Sesquidistus have experienced some variance in results after contending for semis in the past.
Overall, eight teams are represented in the final list of top 25 players in the mixed division, with Deep Space leading the way with six players. Another team, Tartu, put all of its representatives on the list in the top ten, though, and looks set to be a strong competitor at WUCC with some US-based players joining the squad.
Team names in parentheses represent who each player will be playing with at WUCC, and comparisons are with respective WMP and MMP lists from 2023.
1. Jakob Tamm (MMP, Tartu Turbulence, Estonia) NEW
Tamm wins the battle of the last two European players of the year to take top spot. A central player for Tartu, he is one of the main reasons the team is among the best in Europe. He can go deep, he can hit any part of the field as a thrower, and he’s been an excellent leader for the Estonian upstarts. Equipped with some extremely talented additions, they could be a dark horse contender at WUCC.
2. Johanna Roy (WMP, Mosquitos, Austria) NEW
The reigning European Player of the Year in the Mixed Division is a matchup nightmare, able to get free all over the field and keep the Mosquitos offense whirring at all times. She is one of the best tone-setters in the European game and has very few holes.
3. Lisa Schütz (WMP, Zamperl, Germany) NEW
Schütz is another German World Games player to make a big impact on this list. She has previously played for Tiefseetaucher but will be playing for Munich rivals Zamperl at WUCC alongside several other talented former Divers2 on a team that looks incredibly under-seeded.
4. Helen Tera (WMP, Tartu Turbulence, Estonia) NEW
Tera is another key reason for Tartu’s emergence and has taken on a role as one of the most experienced players on the team. She has continued to keep standards high both in the club and her own game, and her combinations with Tamm and the other Tartu player on this list are incredibly hard to stop for any team in Europe.
5. Jakob Dunshirn (MMP, Mosquitos, Austria) NEW
Dunshirn is the first player on this list to make the bulk of their contributions on defense. While Mosquitos will pull them over to play offense in difficult moments, it’s in setting the example for defensive effort, intensity and intelligence that Dunshirn has contributed most significantly to the reigning European champs. They have the speed and smarts to make life hard for anyone.
6. Marin Raba (WMP, Tartu Turbulence, Estonia) NEW
Raba has developed astonishingly quickly into an all-around threat on the level of almost anyone in Europe. Only a couple of years ago, she had never played at an elite level, and now she’s going into WUCC as one of the key players for a team with realistic hopes of a top eight spot. Who knows where she’ll be in a few more years.
7. Tom Blasman (MMP, Tiefseetaucher, Germany) ⬆️ 9
Blasman has returned to the Mixed Division after a sojourn in open with Mooncatchers, GRUT, and various Canadian teams over the last couple of years. He’s joined Tiefseetaucher at an opportune time, with plenty of touches up for grabs given the shift of some players to Zamperl, and Blasman often looked like the best player on the field at Elite Invite. More time with the team ahead of WUCC, and he could drive them to be a factor late in the tournament.
8. Denis Holzer (MMP, Tiefseetaucher, Germany) NEW
Holzer has been one of the best throwers in the Mixed Division for several years. Often racking up gaudy assist numbers, his ability to drive the disc downfield and get open reliably in the reset space is massive for the German team.
9. Rachel Naden (WMP, Deep Space, Great Britain) ⬆️ 1
Naden continues to be an all-around threat for the team from London and has been a huge part of their success in recent seasons. She will be a difficult cover downfield for any defender once the games kick off at WUCC.
10. Jack Halkyard (MMP, Deep Space, Great Britain) NEW
Halkyard is another who is relatively new to the elite level but has thrived since getting there. He is one of Deep Space’s most important disc handlers and equally at home on offense and defense. If there are any tough moments, expect to see Halkyard on the field and around the disc.
11. Torben Hörnschemeyer (MMP, Tiefseetaucher, Germany) NEW
Hörnschemeyer is another all-around player. He has been the driver of the O-line but has also, potentially in relation to the addition of Blasman, been playing defense and marshaling that group as well. Another excellent thrower, he’ll be playing big points for the Munich team whenever they arrive.
12. Iain Tait (MMP, Deep Space, Great Britain) NEW
The reigning Defensive Player of the Year makes a big impact whenever he is on the field. His height, speed, and ability to leave his feet quickly mean he is a terror in the lane against cutters. But it also means that after a turnover, he simply has to be accounted for. Expect him to switch lines when Deep Space need a boost.
13. Ruth Golightly (WMP, Deep Space, Great Britain) NEW
Golightly has been the picture of consistency for Deep Space since joining from local(ish) rivals Reading a few years ago. She is able to control the flow of the game, keep the disc moving, and give her teammates options when they need a reset. She’s also a very solid defender and is another player likely to see action both ways.
14. Alberto Girotto (MMP, CUS Padova Rangers, Italy) NEW
The ambidextrous Italian handler is one of the most exciting players in the division in full flow. Able to throw whatever he wants with either hand, like many Italians he thrives when he’s allowed to establish good movement with his teammates. He’s also very clever with shoulder fakes and subtle moves to get defenders on their heels.
15. Markus Hammerl (MMP, Mosquitos, Austria) NEW
Hammerl is a huge driver for the Mosquitos O-line. He’s got big throws and will happily send hucks downfield, but is also a powerful cutter in his own right, able to get free on strike cuts and score goals just as easily as throwing them.
16. Constantin Angetter (MMP, Mosquitos, Austria) NEW
Angetter is one of the main disc-drivers for the Austrians, able to handle and also do some damage downfield when required. He has developed hugely in the last few years and looks set to be a fixture for Mosquitos for a long time.
17. Lena Schäfer (WMP, Tiefseetaucher, Germany) NEW
Schäfer has been one of the best players for Tiefseetaucher this season and offers an extra dimension to their roster. She is a very capable thrower, a good decision maker, and seems to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.
18. Hannah Yorwerth (WMP, Deep Space, Great Britain) ⬇️ 3
Yorwerth broke out with an amazing run at EUC a few years ago and continues to be a central part of Deep Space’s team. Her ability as a lefty cutter to spread the disc around is hugely important to the offense and her movement skills mean she often draws one of the other team’s best defenders.
19. Linnea Seibert (WMP, Tiefseetaucher, Germany) NEW
Seibert has played on offense and defense for the Germans, offering excellent consistency as a thrower, puller, and defender. Whatever she is tasked to do for the team, she will do well, and will surely help her team win.
20. Andy Lewis (MMP, Reading, Great Britain) NEW
Lewis has been one of the central disc handlers and offensive threats for Reading for years and continues to be one of the matchups other teams have to account for when they play the British team.
21. Michael Schütz (MMP, Zamperl, Germany) NEW
Schütz is young but has made a huge impact on the mixed division in a short space of time. Another player moving to Zamperl (alongside his sister Lisa), he will help make them a very intimidating low seed.
22. Miriam Förster (WMP, Mosquitos, Austria) NEW
Förster moved to Mosquitos this season and will bring what she always brings, whether it’s for club or for Germany’s national teams: consistent throwing, smart defense, and excellent leadership.
23. Pia Bankwitz (WMP, Zamperl, Germany) NEW
Bankwitz is another to join Zamperl this season and another to have made a big impact in a short space of time. She is still young, but will be one of the best athletes for the Munich team.
24. Leila Denniston (WMP, Deep Space, Great Britain) ⬇️ 11
Denniston has been one of the leaders of Deep Space since the beginning and will play at yet another elite tournament with the London team this summer. She has also played with New York XIST and will bring huge amounts of experience and leadership to the squad alongside her obvious athletic and technical talents.
25. Mateusz Gibki (MMP, Savage, Poland) NEW
Gibki emerged as one of the most dangerous throwers in Europe for the last several years and has been a huge factor in several surprising results for Savage Ultimate. Those results won’t be surprises anymore and Gibki is now recognized as one of the top players in the division.
