Welcome to Better Box Scores’ coverage of the semi-pro seasons. It is anchored by EDGE, which converts goals, assists, blocks, turnovers, and yards gained into one metric, while accounting for the scoring and turnover environment.

A few thoughts on the UFA Championship Weekend based on our BBSM leaderboard (Table 1). To start, Champ Weekend MVP voters can thank Walker Frankenberg for making their job easy. The fourth-year star out of Middlebury not only had the best game in the final, but he was also the only player on the weekend to have two A+ games (statistically).

Given Oakland’s weekend dominance, one might have expected at least one other Spider to land twice on the leaderboard. But no, and that’s really the story of this year’s Spiders, not just at Champ Weekend, but all season long. If Boston’s title run last year was characterized by the brilliant seasons of Tobe Decraene and Tanner Johnson-Go, Oakland’s run is characterized not just by depth, but by a certain sort of depth. Let’s look at a few charts.

Figure 1 uses our Player Efficiency Rankings (PER) to help characterize team depth. We use this adjusted production-per-turnover value since, in theory, every player on a team can achieve maximum efficiency. With league-average PER = 100, 25 percent of the league (187 players) had season-long values of 107 or greater. Figure 1 shows how many of those 187 were on each team. Because generating production and avoiding turns is easier if surrounded by superior talent, PER scores may reflect team success as much as explain it, but it’s a good starting point.
