After announcing earlier this year that the 2027 World Under-24 Ultimate Championships would be held in Japan, the World Flying Disc Federation has reversed the decision and plans to return the event to Logroño, Spain, where it was hosted in 2025.
WFDF Vice President Brian Gisel said that the decision was made in conjunction with the Japan Flying Disc Federation. “Due to increased demand on JFDF staff from other events, the organization has come to the realization that they can not allocate enough time to ensure WU24 would be hosted at the top level expected by participants,” he said.
The JFDF, who at press time had not responded to a request for comment, are hosting the ultimate portion of the 2027 World Masters Games in May.
Max Vitali and his team from Logroño will now host a major WFDF event for the third consecutive year, after hosting U24 last year and the World Junior Ultimate Championships this summer. The announced dates for the tournament — June 19-26, 2027 — will not change. “WFDF looks forward to returning to a known venue with a trusted event partner,” said Gisel.
WFDF made a similar change in 2022 when the World Ultimate Club Championships were initially planned to be held in the United Kingdom but were moved to the tournament’s previous host site in Cincinnati, Ohio.
U24s will be back in Europe now for the fourth consecutive cycle: ’25 Logroño, Spain; ’23 Nottingham, UK; and ’19 Heidelburg, Germany were the previous three hosts.1 The tournament was last held in the Asia-Pacific region in January 2018 in Perth, Australia.
The 2021 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ↩
