The Dallas Roughnecks continue their splashy entrance to the AUDL by signing another titan of ultimate: Jimmy Mickle.

Mickle will join Beau Kittredge and Cassidy Rasmussen on the Roughnecks’ inaugural roster, bringing together arguably three of the world’s top five players onto one team.

“He’s got a big personality and a big smile,” said Roughnecks owner Jim Gerencser. “And I’m expecting big things from him. A little Micklemania in Dallas.”

Gerencser didn’t elaborate on the terms of Mickle’s contract, although he did say that Mickle will earn less than Kittredge this season. Gerencser also works with Mickle through Ditch Media, Gerencser’s video streaming venture, and E.R.I.C., Gerencser’s charity organization.

“It was kind of a perfect storm,” said Mickle of his decision to join the Roughnecks. “I’m still living in Colorado, so I wanted to play somewhere close so I wasn’t taking crazy flights every week…I quit my job in October to do more work with Ditch and E.R.I.C., so playing with the Roughnecks made more sense to be able to do more of that.

“I also want to be fighting to win the Championship and I think we’ll be in a good spot to do that with some top-level players.”

Mickle played last season with the San Diego Growlers, a team that, like Dallas, made eye-catching signings in its first year; along with Mickle, the Growlers added Kurt Gibson. Despite its big stars, San Diego missed the playoffs in the ultra-competitive Western Division.

The Roughnecks hope to avoid a similar fate. Not only has the team signed three of ultimate’s biggest stars (all three were on Ultiworld’s 2015 All-Club 1st Team; Rasmussen was named Player of the Year), but Gerencser hinted that more big signings are still to come.

The Roughnecks will hold their tryouts this coming weekend as they look to add the bulk of their roster.
