Ultiworld’s 2024 Block of the Year bracket is presented by Spin Ultimate; all opinions are those of the author(s). Find out how Spin can get you, and your team, looking your best this season.
One of our most popular series to begin each year, it’s time to look back at last year and let our readers decide some of the top plays of 2024. Our Subscribers narrowed down and seeded the initial nomination list to the final sixteen (eight from MMP and eight from WMP) and the public voted their way through a competitive bracket to leave us with the top block.
Tessa Swinson – Misfit Ultimate (New Zealand Club)
Our 2024 Block of the Year is a doozie. Look how sure the Blueberries receiver is that she’s about to catch the game-winning goal: two hands up, eyes focused, feet well inside the front line. And –BOOM!- Tessa Swinson comes flying in like a comic book superhero to blow the pass to smithereens. It was a combination of factors that turned this one into the year’s best. Between the sheer altitude of the bid, the limbs-flying-every-which-way form, and, (of course) the pressure of the moment, nothing tops it.
Taken with countryman Charles Paterson’s 2024 Catch of the Year, that makes two straight awards for New Zealand ultimate. Move over rugby union, there’s a new Kiwi national pastime.
