In early April, the Washington Area Frisbee Club will be hosting Disc/Diversity on Howard University’s campus for the 10th stop on the Con10enT Tour. The organizations are collaborating to bring players from across the country to DC’s HBCU to celebrate Black players’ excellence as athletes. A variety of community events will run from Friday, April 10th, to Sunday, April 12th. The event is also intended to serve as outreach to the Howard University community to generate excitement about the sport.
“To strive to help facilitate opportunities that our communities desire or seek is our responsibility every day. Especially in the context of what our communities are facing in the present day, it is incredibly important we remain firm and speak loudly to affirm to everyone in our communities they are loved and cherished,” said WAFC board member Tayara Romero Peña. “It wouldn’t have made any sense for our local disc organization to help facilitate an opportunity like this without including, recognizing, and uplifting the efforts already made for such a movement in our sport. To be able to collaborate with Disc/Diversity in of itself is a privilege, and we only hope to be able to amount any positive experience to any community member who would like to take part.”
Over the past five years, Disc/Diversity has organized a variety of showcase games for the Black ultimate community across the country, called the Con10ent Tour. “Back in 2020, I was seeing so many things that were meant to help, were actually hurting people,” said Disc/Diversity Founder and CEO Shanye Crawford about why she founded the organization. “When I need an outlet, when I need to be free, I love to play [ultimate]. But I was finding, like so many other players that look like me, that the pitch was no longer freeing. So, with my own hurt and dissatisfaction, coupled with what I was hearing from other Black players, I said, ‘Let’s try and do something crazy!'” From those feelings, Disc/Diversity was born.
In 2021, the original Con10ent Tour featured stops in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle. Those first showcase games sparked six more stops across the country over the next three years. At every stop, mixed teams made up of elite Black players faced off in a full-length game. The local community packed the stands at each stop.
Shanye recalls how special seeing the Tour come to life was at the first stop in Philadelphia. “You’ve had so many meetings, done so much planning. Then, it actually happened, and people actually showed up. That was everything to me. The feeling of watching the players descend upon Edgely Field was otherworldly. The way that we came together, it was undeniable that we belonged to each other.”
This is not the first time the DC area has hosted a Disc/Diversity showcase game. The Youth Ultimate League of Arlington (YULA) hosted a stop on the Con10ent Tour in 2022. The game was a showcase event after the first day of the YULA Invite, a premier high school regular-season tournament and High School National Invite qualifier.
