Tonight during the first intermission of the American Hockey League game between the San Diego Gulls and the Bakersfield Condors game members of the San Diego Growlers will play 4 on 4 ultimate.
On ice. Without skates.
“We’re very excited for it,” Growlers co-owner Ryan Slaughter told Ultiworld. “This is one of our biggest opportunities that we’ve had for outreach in our community since we’ve gotten started.”
At this “Ultimate Night” event Growlers players and the team’s mascot will be on hand, while AUDL highlights play on the JumboTron intermittently before the game.
The demographics of AHL and ultimate fans can’t be too dissimilar – especially for San Diegans looking to get in on the ground level of a professional franchise.
This whacky cross-promotional event is a nice demonstration of solidarity among two fledgling organizations. The Gulls, who are affiliated with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks, are the newest professional team in San Diego – a title previously held by the Growlers.
There should be a good crowd on hand to watch these eight brave souls try to play ultimate on a surface where athletes typically wear knives on their feet and body armor. The Gulls take a four game win streak into tonight’s contest.
The puck drops at 7:05 PST and you can follow along with this madness on the Growlers periscope channel.
