USA Ultimate announced this afternoon that both the Division I and Division III College Championships have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Given the continued postponements of other large sporting events, the announcement comes as no surprise.
“With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) ongoing recommendation to suspend mass gatherings, state public health emergencies declared in Ohio and Wisconsin, increased government lockdowns, extended closures of athletic facilities, virtually all colleges and universities limiting travel and activity of its sports teams for the remainder of the school year, and the uncertainty surrounding the duration of these restrictions and the future impact of the outbreak, it’s evident that these events can no longer continue as planned in a safe and fair manner,” wrote USA Ultimate in their release.
There was no timetable given for when the events might take place, but USAU Board President Robyn Fennig suggested that there could be a “fall option” for the tournaments. USAU Marketing Director Andy Lee said that all discussions are still in their early stages.
USAU is working to keep their original hosts for next year’s championships. They are talking with the host facilities in Milwaukee about the D-I Championships for Memorial Day weekend 2021 and with Oshadega about running the D-III Championships in Ohio.
