The end of the college regular season is nearly here, so it’s time to check in on how the key awards races are shaping up.
The Player of the Year watchlist is bursting with contenders. Even those who ultimately fall short of the POTY podium will crowd other award and All-America conversations.
Some exceptional freshmen makes for a similarly exciting Rookie of the Year race.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at who are on the shortlist based on their play so far this spring.
Women’s
Player of the Year
Dawn Culton (North Carolina)
It really could be coasting time for the reigning Player of the Year, playing on a stacked team that has only been challenged once or twice this season. But it seems as if she, like the bus in Speed, literally cannot take her foot off of the gas. She’s still relishing the chances to generate spectacular blocks against some of the best players in the game. Add in her ever-expanding offensive value and…do we really need this many words to explain why Dawn Culton is in the thick of the POTY race? No, not if you’ve even paid tangential attention in the past two years.
