Last spring I penned an opinion column that UNC Pleiades’ then-four year winning streak that ended up totaling 143 consecutive wins was the most impressive thing we’ve ever seen in college ultimate. Then, despite a streak-breaking loss along the way, Pleiades went out and won a fourth straight title, cementing themselves as the most dominant team in college ultimate history. A day earlier, their men’s division counterparts UNC Darkside played in a tenth straight national semifinal, a feat that feels antithetical to the college game, in which generations of players cycle out every four to six years.
Pleiades’ earning every single title in the span it might take one of their players to complete a bachelor’s degree is a feat yet unseen in college ultimate. And while Darkside could only win a mere three straight titles, their decade of stadium games is also unmatched across over 40 years of college ultimate. Rather than just marvel at the greatness radiating from of Chapel Hill, the content machine demands that we label one feat the most impressive.
