Livestreaming

We have been hearing it since we began Ultiworld last July: “When are you going to start livestreaming?” The answer is finally here. Ultiworld will be livestreaming games for the AUDL’s New York Empire.

This is our first foray into livestreaming, and we expect to bring our setup to tournaments in the future for coverage of college and club ultimate around the country.

Our system, compared to NexGen’s, is much more lean. We will have a single camera feed and, for now, no ability to do graphics overlays (like scoreboards) or replays. But we will be able to offer a robust, HD livestream with great quality picture and sound.

The cost of a full livestreaming setup akin to what you’ll see from ESPN when they broadcast at the College Championships — and basically what NexGen uses — is quite high. Could we get there at some point? Yes, certainly. But we felt it would be better to offer a basic livestream with an extremely mobile setup than to wait until we had $35,000 lined up to buy a replay machine, camera switcher, etc.

This is a bit meta, even for the Editor’s Blog, but I thought a little perspective would be of interest.
