Here’s a truism: there’s no one right way to build a team. The truth behind the truism is that there are dozens of right ways to build the team. You can arrange campus visits for YCC prospects, send emails to high schools with ultimate programs, set up a booth at the fall activities fair, cold-call athletic-looking people in class or at the gym, host a learn-to-play night (or two or three), create a fun social media account… Chances are you’ve tried nearly all of these, with varying degrees of success.
There’s a cheat code, though, straight out of the realm of NCAA college sports: the transfer portal. Take a player already seasoned from a couple of college campaigns (or more) and voila: plug-and-play excellence. Without any big NIL money to grease the wheels, transfer movement in college ultimate is slow compared to the headline-grabbing football and basketball moves. That said, some teams have still found a way to nab the sport’s Hailey Van Lith-types to buttress the homegrown talent. Here are seven of the highest-impact players who switched to a new college program in 2024, listed with their current and previous teams.
