D-I Women’s

EWOne on Top

As expected, #1 Tufts EWO won this season’s East Coast Invite.

EWO rolled though mostly unranked competition, with their closest result a 15-9 win over MIT sMITe in their quarterfinal matchup. The tournament win is Tufts’ third of the season after taking home the titles at Queen City Tune Up and Stanford Invite. EWO enter the series with a perfect 18-0 record on the season including wins over eight separate ranked teams.

#18 Northeastern Valkyries, #22 Virginia Hydra, and #24 Pennsylvania Venus were the other teams expected to contend for the tournament title. Neither Hydra nor Venus could hang with EWO, and both ended their tournaments earlier than expected. Venus lost to D-III’s Haverford/Bryn Mawr (see more in the D-III section below) in the quarterfinal round, while Virginia lost a pool play game to Notre Dame Echo and dropped down to the 9th place bracket – which they won. As for the Valkyries? Not so good. They lost any chance they had at earning the New England region an additional bid. Northeastern lost all four of their pool play games and dropped down to the 25th place game when bracket play began.

Notre Dame were the big winners on the weekend, rolling through all of their match play and bracket matchups before hitting a stone wall in the final (EWO took that game 13-4). Frisbee-Rankings.com‘s estimates show that this weekend’s strong performance has Echo sitting just behind the bid picture. While USA Ultimate goes through and removes ineligible games, there is a small but real chance that this weekend was enough to propel the Great Lakes to a second opportunity at Nationals.

Around the Division

  • Nevada-Reno Black Ice avenged an earlier loss to D-III Occidental to win Sinvite. Both teams lost to the Claremont Greenshirts on Saturday, but Claremont did not play in Sunday’s championship game.
  • D-III’s Middlebury Pranksters took home the title at Northeast Classic. Vermont B Bruckus finished third to pace the D-I teams.
  • Purdue Xpress were clearly the best team at Old Capitol Open. They went undefeated with their closest matchup a 8-6 win over D-III Macalester Pursesnatchers.
  • Illinois Menace won their home tournament, Corny Classic. Menace took down Grand Valley State Lakers during pool play and in the final, an 8-7 win.
  • McGill MUT took down Harvard Quasar during pool play and in the final to win the New England Open.
  • Georgia Tech Wreck stormed through the competition at Needle in a Ho-Stack. Wreck bageled two teams over the course of the weekend and won the final 15-1 over Tennessee Big Orange Screw.
  • Grand Canyon FalLopes went undefeated in Sunday’s power pool to win the Canyon Classic.

Looking Ahead

This weekend closed out the regular season. Every team gets next weekend off before conference tournaments, the first leg of the USA Ultimate series, begin on April 12-13.

D-I Men’s

West is Best at Easterns

#3 Colorado Mamabird flew two time zones away but took down all opponents at Easterns, beating #2 UMass Zoodisc 15-12 in the final. Mamabird faced no shortage of tests, earning wins against #1 North Carolina Darkside, #5 Oregon Ego, and #6 Cal Poly SLO SLOCORE as well. Tobias Brooks shot his way up the Player of the Year leaderboard with a stellar all-around performance. Colorado’s depth and team defense stood out and provided enough support for a series of comfortable wins over top teams.

For UMass, it was a third straight tournament final without a win – Florida Warm Up, Smoky Mountain Invite, and now Easterns – but again, it was the third major tournament of the season where UMass made the final. Despite playing Easterns without Caelan McSweeney and with Wyatt Kellman on a minutes restriction, Zoodisc look once again like the powerful, talented title contenders they have been for the last three seasons.

Though they would bow out of the tournament in quarters, the highlight of day one was #4 Carleton CUT’s stunning comeback against SLO to take the top spot in Pool C. CUT were down 12-9, but rallied a four goal run to win 13-12. One additional bright spot for CUT: Tej Murthy made his season debut, bringing another two-way offensive threat from the injured list to the active roster.

The team that ended CUT’s run: Oregon. For Sunday’s games, Oregon shifted handler Max Massey over to the D-line and his ability to drive an offense shone when given the spotlight. While Oregon historically had trouble converting break chances, this personnel adjustment gave Ego enough firepower to build and maintain a comfortable lead in that game. Though they could not keep their bracket run going past a fun semifinal against UMass, Ego showed that they’re willing to make necessary adjustments to put themselves in the best position to win.

Ultiworld streamed 20 games from the tournament which subscribers can watch in our video library. Reporter Patrick Stegemoeller was at the field site; you can read his day one recap here, and stay tuned for more written coverage later this week.

With Frisbee-Rankings.com updated with results from the tournament, the basic bid picture is rounding into form. Initially, it seems like #24 Tufts E-men did enough by making the championship bracket and #12 Brown Brownian Motion likewise by winning the ninth place bracket to hold on to their bids, though regional running mates #8 Vermont Chill and #10 Northeastern Huskies may have left the region a few bids short by falling out of the top 20. #14 Penn State Spank had a positive weekend, but #13 Pittsburgh En Sabah Nur went just 2-5 to end any hope the Ohio Valley had of earning two bids like last season. Similarly, #17 Georgia Tech Tribe and #18 Georgia Jojah did not do enough collectively to earn the Southeast a second bid.

Around the Division

  • SUNY-Buffalo Green Eggs and Ham won East Coast Invite as the 24 seed! They went undefeated on the weekend and beat Maryland Space Bastards in the final.
  • D-III’s Davenport Panthers won Huck Finn, taking down #22 WashU Contra in the final. WashU otherwise went undefeated on the weekend, with scores strong enough to likely hold on to a strength bid for the South Central. Notre Dame Papal Rage upset early season Cinderellas Chicago Fission in the quarterfinal round, giving some interesting seeding decisions to the Great Lakes regional coordinators ahead of the series.
  • Arizona Sunburn and BYU CHI-B tied for first in pool play with identical 4-1 records at Sinvite, though BYU won their head-to-head matchup. USC B Blockdown were set to face Arizona in the final, though that game appears cancelled on the score reporter page.
  • Vassar Swinging Monks beat Ithaca Nawshus 11-10 in the final of Northeast Classic
  • Iowa IHUC went undefeated without any particularly close games to win Old Capitol Open. Wisconsin-La Crosse BadLUC was the other finalist.
  • Illinois Rise went undefeated, including three double-game-point wins to win their home tournament: Corny Classic. Two of their close wins came over D-III upstart Asbury who came in 2nd. Illinois B won the consolation bracket, giving all of the prizes to the hometown teams.
  • It was an all D-III final at New England Open with Bowdoin and Brandeis competing for the championship. Northeastern B finished third to pace D-I Teams.
  • Maine Snositi capped an undefeated weekend with a 12-6 win over Rhode Island RIUT in the final to win the Ocean State Invite.
  • Tennessee Prohibition won Needle in a Ho-Stack. They went undefeated on the weekend and beat top seeded Tennessee-Chattanooga Swamp Donkeys 15-8 in the final.
  • West Virginia Wild went undefeated as they won Fishbowl.
  • D-III’s Truman State JujiTSU avenged pool play losses to Oklahoma State Ultimato and Kansas Horrorzontals in the semifinal and final respectively and won the Free State Classic.
  • Southwest Showdown ran two days of pool play rather than a traditional bracket. San Jose State Spartans and USC Lockdown went undefeated on Saturday, though both lost to D-III Claremont Braineaters, who went undefeated in Sunday’s power pool.
  • Tarleton State Texan Ultimate took down Baylor Stonewall 15-12 in the final of Huckfest.
  • Eastern Michigan Fighting Hellfish won King of the Hill by going undefeated through the round robin.

D-III Women’s

As the regular season roars to a close, this week was quite exciting with several ranked teams in action in events across the country.

Around the Division

  • Five D-III teams were in action at East Coast Invite, and all of them were scheduled to play multiple D-III specific matchups to help the division increase connectivity. #5 Haverford/Bryn Mawr Sneetches had the best weekend, with a bracket win over D-I’s Penn propelling the team to the semifinals. #4 Wesleyan Vicious Circles were undefeated against D-III competition, but lost twice to D-I’s Georgia Athena and ended the tournament placed 15th. #2 St Olaf Vortex’s two wins were over hometown teams in Temple and West Chester, but Vortex could not get a D-III win and finished 20th. #15 Mount Holyoke Daisy Chain beat #23 Lehigh Gravity and finished 23rd. Lehigh scored just one win on the weekend and finished in the 25th place game.
  • #3 Macalester Pursesnatchers, Winona State Bad Monaz, and Grinnell Grinneleanor Roosevelts all made the bracket at Old Capitol Open, a D-I tournament. Macalester beat Grinnell in their prequarterfinal matchup, but then lost to Chicago in their quarterfinal. Winona State lost to Northwestern in the prequarter round. Macalester rounded out their weekend in 6th place while Winona State went undefeated in the consolation round robin.
  • D-I Nevada-Reno Black Ice avenged an earlier loss to Occidental WAC to win Sinvite. Both teams lost to #20 Claremont Greenshirts on Saturday, but Claremont did not play in Sunday’s championship game.
  • #10 Middlebury Pranksters beat #25 Rochester EZs in the final of Northeast Classic. Ithaca Kweezy also made it to the semifinal round where they lost to Rochester.

Around the Division

  • #5 Elon Big Fat Bomb came away the champions at an exciting D3 Easterns, overcoming a pool play loss to #20 Wesleyan Nietzsch Factor, whom they ended up beating in the final. Wesleyan were not perfect on the weekend either, dropping a crossover game to #6 Middlebury Pranksters. Middlebury, one of the favorites to win the tournament, lost to Elon in their quarterfinal matchup. #4 Lewis and Clark Bacchus and #12 Williams WUFO were the other semifinalists after winning their pools. Williams downed #2 Franciscan Fatal in a pool play upset. Franciscan were also one of the favorites entering the tournament, but they were upset by a Wesleyan team on the upswing in the quarterfinal round.
  • #1 Davenport Panthers won Huck Finn with an undefeated weekend. Facing largely D-I competition, Davenport won all of their games by at least four goals. This performance cements them as the favorites heading into D-III Nationals and hints that a switch to D-I might be coming sooner rather than later.
  • #19 Puget Sound Postmen were the only undefeated team at Northwest Challenge D3, which only ran as a one-day round robin.
  • #16 Colorado Mines Entropy took down Grinnell Grinnelephants in an all D-III quarterfinal matchup at Old Capitol Open. Entropy would then lose a heartbreaker in semis, falling 11-10 to D-I Wisconsin-La Crosse BadLUC.
  • Asbury made the final at Corny Classic but could not beat D-I’s Illinois Rise, falling to the home team in a crossover matchup and in the tournament final. #23 Lipscomb Bisons earned a D-III win over Michigan Tech DiscoTech, but lost twice to Asbury including in an all D-III semifinal.
  • It was an all D-III final at New England Open with #21 Bowdoin Clown and Brandeis TRON competing for the championship. Bowdoin came away with the win to cap a dominant weekend. No score was closer than an eight goal margin as Clown beat every team on their schedule.
  • Truman State JujiTSU avenged pool play losses to beat D-I Oklahoma State and Kansas in the semifinal and final respectively and won the Free State Classic. John Brown Ironfist went 3-3 to finish in 5th place.
  • Claremont Braineaters beat regional rival Occidental Detox at Southwest Showdown. They also can claim the tournament title after finishing atop Sunday’s power pool. Claremont avenged a Saturday loss to D-I’s USC with a Sunday drubbing; the Brains earned a 13-3 win to cap a dominant performance in the power pool.

Looking Ahead

This weekend closed out the regular season. Every team gets next weekend off before conference tournaments, the first leg of the USA Ultimate series, begin on April 12-13.
