High School Power Rankings: Late April Edition [4/23/25]

Which teams are the early favorites for HSNI bids?

Welcome to the fourth edition of the 2025 High School Power Rankings! The rankings can be permanently found on our Youth Rankings page.

The rankings will eventually be used to determine invitations to the 2025 High School National Invite; currently, we plan to use the rankings published the week of May 19th as the final rankings before final bids are sent out (many bids will be sent out on a rolling basis).

If you have additional information about tournaments or team strength that you would like to be considered for the High School Power Rankings, please email [email protected]. Teams, if you would like to add logos and team information to your Team Pages, follow these instructions!

Without further ado, here are the Top 25 teams in the Boys’ and Girls’ High School Divisions!

Notes

  • What a showing from #7 Independence at Indy Invite, where they smoked good teams including #12 RECA, avenging an earlier loss, and #15 Middleton. Independence snagged an HSNI invite on the strength of their season.
  • Undefeated #6 Open World Learning now has a pair of wins over #13 Edina and could be the best team in the central part of the country. They’ll get their first out-of-state test at Neuqua Knockout, an HSNI qualifier, in a couple weeks.
  • Middleton earned their way back into the rankings with solid showings across the Midwest. They’ve lost to the top teams like Independence and Edina, but they’ve crushed pretty much everyone else.
  • Four Rivers is undefeated so far in Massachusetts play, and they’ve got some big wins over Amherst. Lexington took some losses back at YULA but has dominated so far in their MA league games. We won’t really know what’s going on in New England until Amherst Invite and PVI, but both teams, along with the big states favorite Arlington, have looked good.
  • What to do with Lone Peak? They fell out of the rankings for the first time maybe ever after losing to Mason and RECA at Indy Invite. A one-goal loss to RECA looks pretty good, but a two-goal loss to Mason is a resume killer. Lone Peak’s been a little banged up, so let’s see what they can do at Utah States, where they’ll likely see a very untested #10 Green Canyon, who’s headed to Spaghetti Western the week prior, for the first time. Consider the Utah rankings in flux. Provo could even be a surprise.

Notes

  • How about #8 Washburn! They are undefeated in Minnesota competition, with a pair of wins over #15 Edina. The margins have sometimes been pretty tight, suggesting that it could still be a real battle for the state championship.
  • #14 Provo has established themselves as the clear top team in Utah, and #17 West hung in pretty strong at Seattle Invite against the top Washington teams earlier this month. The Utah girls scene is mostly playing 5v5, but they played a 7s tournament this past week and Provo was the class of the event.
  • Why is #18 Madison suddenly flying into the rankings? They haven’t played meaningful games since YULA. Ultiworld is now using an internal algorithmic ranking system to help inform the Power Rankings, and the algorithm is pretty impressed with the YULA results, like a close loss to #13 Jordan. #23 Alexandria may still be the favorite to win states, but the on-paper results so far actually point to Madison. We’ll see what happens at Spring Fling this weekend, where both teams are in action!

Looking Ahead

We’ve got another Mid-Atlantic staple event, Spring Fling, coming up this weekend that should help clarify the rankings along the East Coast. Some teams in the field already have HSNI bids locked up; others are fighting to move up the rankings and claim one of their own.

We’ve also got State Championships starting this weekend, with Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas on deck. We’re especially watching Georgia, where #3 Lakeside and #24 Midtown may go head-to-head for the Boys Final. Midtown upset Lakeside in a warm-up this past weekend: they could fly up the rankings if they pull off the win at States. On the Girls side, #5 Paideia, #24 Midtown, and Decatur will duke it.

Right around the corner, we’ve got more HSNI qualifiers: Spaghetti Western and Amherst Invite are in 10 days, Neuqua Knockout is the weekend after that, and then the Pioneer Valley Invitational will close out the bids in mid-May! How will the California teams compare to Oregon, Utah, and Colorado? Who will prove to be at the top of the Massachusetts rankings? Lots of huge games coming up.
