College Update: The Nationals Field Takes Shape

Most regional championships took place this weekend, with major upsets in the D-III divisions!

D-I Women’s

  • Defending national champions #10 North Carolina Pleiades won Atlantic Coast Regionals with a 15-9 win over #22 Virginia Hydra to take the lone bid to Nationals.
  • #7 Michigan Flywheel overcame a three goal deficit in the final to win Great Lakes Regionals and take the single bid available to Nationals. #18 Notre Dame Echo held a 10-7 lead in the final before Flywheel went on a break run at the end of the game to take home their most important win of the season so far.
  • Cornell Wild Roses went undefeated this weekend to win Metro East Regionals and earn their place at Nationals. Cornell beat UConn 14-6 in the regional final.
  • #1 Tufts EWO beat #5 Vermont Ruckus 12-9 in the final to win New England Regionals and make their way to Nationals. Ruckus turned around and held the Northeastern Valkyries scoreless in the second half of their 14-7 win to claim the region’s second bid to Nationals.
  • #2 Carleton Syzygy allowed just 15 goals in six games, winnning North Central Regionals handily to clinch their spot at Nationals.
  • Penn Venus beat Ohio Stacked Cats 13-9 to win the Ohio Valley Region. Venus will go to Nationals for the third time in five years.
  • #3 Colorado Quandary won South Central Regionals with a 13-4 win over Texas Melee in the final to return to Nationals in dominant fashion. Quandary allowed just 11 goals over five games in windy, wet conditions over the course of the weekend.
  • #25 Georgia Athena beat Georgia Tech Wreck 15-6 in the final to win Southeast Regionals and take the region’s single bid to Nationals.
  • A whopping six bids were in play at Southwest Regionals. #17 UC Santa Barbara Burning Skirts won the region with an undefeated weekend. #11 Stanford Superfly eked out an 11-10 win over #8 Cal Poly SLO SLOmotion to take second place after Cal Poly lost the final to UC Santa Barbara 15-10. #12 UC San Diego Dragon Coalition rebounded from losses to the aforementioned teams to clinch fourth place with #13 UC Santa Cruz Sol taking fifth. #20 UC Davis Rogue took the sixth and final bid with a 15-4 win over the Southern California Hellions of Troy, who beat #21 UCLA BLU on their way to the game-to-go.

Looking Ahead

The final five teams – all coming from Northwest Regionals – will qualify for Nationals next weekend.

Regionals Results

  • #2 North Carolina Darkside won Atlantic Coast Regionals without allowing double digit goals in any game. They beat James Madison Hellfish in the final. Darkside advance as the only team out of the Atlantic Coast.
  • It will not affect the Nationals picture, but there are enough Atlantic Coast Dev teams to have their own regional tournament. NC State B Sixpack took down Virginia Tech B 12-11 to win the title as best B team in the region.
  • Michigan MagnUM won Great Lakes Regionals and earned their place at Nationals for the sixth straight season with a 14-9 win over Indiana Hoosiermama?s in the final.
  • Ottawa Gee-Gees will return to Nationals for a second straight season. They won Metro East Regionals with a 15-8 victory over Cornell Buds in the final.
  • #5 Carleton CUT beat #24 Minnesota 15-8 to win North Central Regionals and take the single available bid to Nationals.
  • #20 Penn State Spank won Ohio Valley Regionals and the region’s lone bid to Nationals. Spank took down Pittsburgh En Sabar Nur in the semifinal 13-8, and beat Ohio State Leadbelly 15-9 in the final. This is the second straight year that Penn State have qualified for Nationals, and the first season since 2004 that Pitt failed to qualify.
  • With some schedule modifications due to a weather delay shutting down play on Saturday, there was not a traditional final played at South Central Regionals. #1 Colorado Mamabird (13-6 over Colorado State Hibida) and #23 WashU Contra (13-7 over #15 Texas TUFF) qualified for Nationals with their semifinal wins. Texas then beat Colorado State 13-11 in the third place game-to-go to claim the final bid to Nationals.
  • #13 Georgia Jojah survived an in-state showdown against #21 Georgia Tech Tribe to win Southeast Regionals, taking the final 14-12 to win the only available bid to Nationals.
  • The top three seeds advanced from Southwest Regionals to Nationals. #6 Cal Poly SLO SLOCORE went undefeated to win the region with a 15-11 victory over #10 UC Santa Cruz Slugs in the final. In the third-place game, which doubled as the game-to-go, #9 Cal Ursa Major escaped with a 13-11 win over a feisty UC Santa Barbara Black Tide squad.

Looking Ahead

The final eight bids to Nationals will be earned next weekend. Three spots are up for grabs at New England Regionals while five are on the line at Northwest Regionals.

D-III Women’s

Regionals Results

  • #1 Wesleyan Vicious Circles lived up to their top seed and won Metro East Regionals with a 7-6 victory over #18 Rochester EZ Women. Rochester recovered to win the region’s second bid to Nationals with an 8-2 win over Ithaca Kweezy.
  • #14 Middlebury Pranksters beat #17 Williams Nova 12-7 to win New England Regionals and claim a spot at Nationals. #12 Mt. Holyoke Daisy Chain then also beat Williams 8-7 in the game-to-go to claim the region’s second bid. Top seeded #23 Wellesley Whiptails fell to Williams in pool play and lost to Amherst Sparkle Motion in the second place quarterfinals.
  • #2 Haverford/Bryn Mawr Sneetches did not allow more than six goals in any game as they rolled to an undefeated weekend at Ohio Valley Regionals and earned a spot at Nationals. #7 Kenyon Blu Ray’s 14-7 win over Lehigh Gravity earned them the second bid.
  • #19 Claremont Greenshirts won the first two games in their best-of-three set against Occidental WAC to win Southwest Conferences, which double as regionals since they are the only two teams. This will be Claremont’s first appearance at Nationals since 2018.

Looking Ahead

The next event on the calendar is the D-III College Championships which take place on May 17-19 at the Skagit River Sports Complex in Burlington, Washington.

Regionals Results

  • #1 Davenport Panthers went undefeated to win Great Lakes Regionals and earn their spot at Nationals where they’ll be the favorite to take home their first title. Hillsdale Chargers will join them in Washington after beating Butler Big Dog in the second place game. Asbury came into the tournament seeded second as the bid earner, but they lost to Hillsdale in the first place semifinal and Butler in the second place semifinal to fall out of contention.
  • #4 Wesleyan Nietzsch Factor went undefeated including a 15-11 win over #9 Rochester Piggies to win Metro East Regionals. Rochester earned their way to Nationals with a 15-6 win over Ithaca Nawshus in the second place game.
  • #14 Carleton CHOP knocked off the defending champions #12 St. Olaf Berzerkers to win North Central Regionals and claim the only available bid to Nationals. This marks the third straight season that the defending champions failed to qualify for Nationals after 2024’s Colorado College and 2023’s Oklahoma Christian teams also did not make it out of regionals.
  • #13 Franciscian Fatal emerged undefeated from a chaotic Ohio Valley Regionals to claim the region’s single bid to Nationals. #19 Kenyon SERF survived pool play losses to Haverford and #25 Oberlin Flying Horesecows to make it to the final.
  • #7 Oklahoma Christian Eagles went undefeated to win South Central Regionals, with a 12-5 win in the final over #10 Colorado College Wasabi the key result. Then, for the second season in a row, #15 Missouri S&T Miner Threat upset Colorado College in the game to go, this time winning 13-8 to claim a spot at Nationals.

Looking Ahead

New England Regionals take place next week to wrap up the Nationals field. After that comes the D-III College Championships which take place on May 17-19 at the Skagit River Sports Complex in Burlington, Washington.
