D-I Women’s

Brown Takes the Crown

Brown Shiver overcame all foes including some heavy wind to win the inaugural Women’s Division at Florida Warm Up. With 20 mph gusts around the field complex, many teams adjusted their strategy to play zone defense and launch punts for field position with the disc. Shiver used that combination to take down Florida 10-8 in the final.

Ultiworld recorded five games from the tournament which subscribers can watch in our video library.

Around the Division

  • #4 UC Santa Cruz Sol dispatched the Southern California Hellions of Troy 13-6 to win the Stanford Open and earn their place at the Stanford Invite in a few weeks. This tournament also featured a bracket bagel with UBC-B Thunderwolves taking down UCLA-B Midas 13-0 in the quarterfinal.
  • D-III #14 Rice Torque won Antifreeze over D-III #25 Trinity Altitude. Texas State Trainwreck and Texas-B Mayhem were the D-I teams in attendance. They split games with each other, with Texas State taking third and Texas-B fourth.
  • Winter weather persisted in the mid-Atlantic area, causing the cancellation of Winta Binta Vinta, which had already been delayed a week.

Looking Ahead

There are just two events on next week’s calendar, with the Presidents’ Day Qualifiers taking place in Irvine, CA and Bonanza taking place in Harrisonburg, VA (weather permitting of course).

D-I Men’s

Florida Cool Down

#1 Carleton CUT are this year’s Florida Warm Up winners. Declan Miller, Axel Olson, Fin Fuhrmann, and company were unfazed by moderate wind on offense. Ryan duSaire, Thomas Shope, Nate De Morgan, and company were at their best limiting available space on defense. With several Minnesota pro players on their roster, neither the frigid Wind Chill temperatures (in the 30s! In Florida!) nor the gusty breeze were a problem for CUT.

#4 Massachusetts Zoodisc were a worthy opponent in the final. All weekend they displayed the requisite talent and poise of a title contender. While they will not return to Amherst with any trophies, they made a strong opening statement to kick off the season.

#12 Michigan MagnUM and #18 Vermont Chill were the other semifinalists, and each has lots of positive takeaways from the weekend. With over 40 teams in attendance, there is simply too much to cover in this one recap. Luckily, reporter Josh Katz was on the scene in Apopka, Florida. You can read his Day One and Day Two reports or watch the nineteen games Ultiworld recorded in our video library.

Around the Division

  • D-III’s Embry-Riddle Dirty Birds went undefeated this weekend, taking down Florida State-B DUF Eyyy to win Marsh Madness.
  • UCLA Smaug went undefeated to win the Presidents’ Day Qualifiers and earn their spot at Presidents’ Day Invite in San Diego a few weeks from now.
  • Though #5 UNC Darkside, UNC-B, Duke, and #3-D3 Elon were able to get some Friday night games in at Carolina Kickoff, with UNC dispatching Duke and Elon, the rest of the tournament was sadly cancelled due to weather. Tournaments Big D in Little D and Mid Atlantic Warmup met the same fate.

Looking Ahead

There is plenty of Regional action on tap; next week’s schedule includes Golden Triangle Invitational, Stanford Open, Vice Presidents’ Day Invite, and UMN B Duck Dome.

D-III Women’s

Stanford Open Opens the Season

A few teams were in action this weekend at the Stanford Open. #13 Lewis & Clark Artemis had the best performance of the bunch, finishing fourth after making a semifinals appearance. #16 Portland UPRoar finished sixth and earned a 10-5 win over #22 Claremont Greenshirts, who finished twelfth in the 14 team tournament. Fans were also treated to Santa Clara’s first outing as a D-III competitor. RAGE fell to Lewis & Clark in pool play but won by two over Portland to claim fifth overall.

Around the Division

  • #14 Rice Torque won Antifreeze with a 12-6 victory in the tournament final over #25 Trinity Altitude.

Looking Ahead

There are just two events on next week’s calendar, with the Presidents’ Day Qualifiers taking place in Irvine, CA and Bonanza taking place in Harrisonburg, VA (weather permitting of course). Neither tournament’s team list is publicly available, so we’ll let you know next week if there’s any D-III teams in action.

Two weeks from now, the D3 Grand Prix will feature several of the division’s best teams.

D-III Men’s

Middlebury Warms Up

Competing at Florida Warm Up, #1 Middlebury Pranksters had the best weekend of the D-III contingent. They went 6-2 and finished tenth with several impressive wins over teams on the fringe of being ranked in our D-I Top 25 like Wisconsin Hodags and Virginia Tech Burn. The trio of Peter Mans, Louis Douville Beaudoin, and Geir Hartl stood up with the best talent of their D-I opponents.

#5 Ave Maria Gyrenes (1-4 in pool play), #6 Oklahoma Christian Eagles (0-5 in pool play), and #21 Berry Bucks (1-4 in pool play) fared worse against some of the best teams in D-I. For those looking to scout, several games were filmed and are available in Ultiworld’s video library.

Around the Division

  • Embry-Riddle Dirty Birds went undefeated this weekend, taking down D-I’s Florida State-B DUF Eyyy to win Marsh Madness. Ave Maria-B finished fifth with two wins.

Looking Ahead

The schedule is relatively quiet next week with just a handful of teams scheduled to play. #2 Carleton CHOP and #8 St. Olaf Berzerkers will participate in a round robin at UMN B Duck Dome. #24 Lipscomb Bisons and Union Jaxx will be competing at Golden Triangle Invitational. #10 Claremont Braineaters make their sanctioned season debut at Stanford Open along with Portland UPRise and Simon Fraser, who take the top seed overall.

Surely more teams will be in action in two weeks time for the D3 Grand Prix.
