Southern Atlantic Coast Dev Men’s Conferences

This recap was submitted by UNC BatCH’s Neal Parekh

Southern Atlantic Coast Dev Conferences was meant to decide the five of seven teams that would advance to Atlantic Coast Dev Regionals. But more than that, attention was focused on the single strength bid for D-I Regionals awarded to the conference, thanks to UNC BatCH’s 16th-place finish in the Atlantic Coast region off the back of a Commonwealth Cup tournament win in February and holding seed at Needle in a Ho Stack in late March. Despite being the no.1 seed at this tournament, North Carolina B BatCH topped the harder pool, staring down matchups with James Madison B Smellfish and Virginia Tech B Second Degree.

The first round saw BatCH take on JMU B in a 15-6 game that was never close. UNC B took half 8-2 and coasted to the end, with the BatCH O-line never getting broken while the D-line picked up nine breaks. D-liners Caleb Promislow racked up four assists and a goal to go along with Centurian Tzendzalian’s two goals and an assist, while Michael Hopfinger paced the offense with four goals. Parker Hanson, Dylan Edwards, and Micah Dubnoff all picked up two blocks, but the play of the game belonged to Owen Evans, who skied a JMU B defender partway through the first half. The D-line poured on the pressure all tournament, scoring 22 breaks on the weekend.

BatCH was in a dogfight early with Virginia Tech B, with Second Degree taking the only lead BatCH would concede the entire tournament by breaking BatCH in a first half to make the score 5-4. BatCH broke back twice as handler Neal Parekh had the hot hand, connecting on multiple hucks including a cross-field shot to cutter Andrew Carneiro for an early break. But the O-line conceded another break, sending the game to half on serve at 8-7, BatCH ahead. Second Degree, playing their first game of the day in 80 degree heat to BatCH’s second, seemed to have the advantage.

But BatCH’s D-line punched in five breaks to spur a 7-2 run, ending the game 15-9 and sending UNC B to the game-to-go to D-I Regionals. Promislow continued a heater of a tournament with five more assists to accompany four blocks, while O-line cutters Michael Hopfinger and Hanson ensured the offense held the whole second half with two blocks and multiple goals each. Nate Scofield quarterbacked the offense, scoring the game-winner for his fourth point of the match.

The final was a 1v2 classic, pitting NC State B Six Pack against BatCH in a rematch of last year’s Dev Conference universe final. But this time BatCH emerged on top, taking a two-break lead at half and tacking on another three in the second for a 15-10 victory.

BatCH were well aware this was going to be a tough matchup, and they rose to the occasion, with handlers Scofield, Gavin Blurr, and Oliver Spiller working calmly through Six Pack’s zone, and cutters Hopfinger, Evans, Dax Welborn, and Hanson finding space downfield to hold cleanly. The D-line broke NC State B early and often, with three breaks in each half.

Through this, BatCH became the first B team in seven years to make Atlantic Coast Regionals. The last time this happened was BatCH in 2019, which, before this past weekend, was the only time any B team had made Atlantic Coast Regionals.

Championship Superlatives

  • Caleb Promislow put up another masterclass with a line of 4G/1A and had an excellent juggling catch
  • Handler Neal Parekh was involved in scoring all of BatCH’s first-half breaks and went 3/4 on hucking across the game (9/12 across all three games) with a statline of 2G/1A
  • Defender Dylan Edwards locked down the best matchup on Six Pack all game long, and had a diving catch block on the first point of the game
  • Matthew Bain posted a statline of 1G/2B. Both blocks created a short field for easy BatCH conversions, with one being a poach block which allowed BatCH to take half 8-5.
  • Parker Hanson had a great game as always with an assist, two goals, and a layout handblock that stopped a free huck attempt from Six Pack late in the game
  • Freshman Oliver Spiller had three assists
  • Dax Welborn and Nate Scofield had three total scores each, with the last being the tournament winner
Great Lakes
  • Notre Dame Papal Rage defeated Purdue Undue Ultimate 12-9 in the final to capture the East Plains Conference title. Indiana HoosierMama?s and Kentucky KULT also advanced to Regionals, while Louisville LUCKY captured the final spot with a 13-6 victory over the Ball State Wizardz.

Joining them in the next round of the Series will be Columbia Uptown Local, NYU, Rowan Ruf Riders, and the Hofstra Flying Dutchmen, who defeated SUNY-Stony Brook Panic 13-6 in the game-to-go.
  • The Ottawa Gee-Gees beat SUNY-Binghamton Big Bear 15-11 in the championship contest to capture the Western NY Conference. Other teams advancing include Syracuse Doom, who took the second spot over SUNY-Binghamton 15-8, Cornell Buds, and SUNY-Buffalo Green Eggs and Ham. The RIT Spudheds earned an 11-8 victory over Toronto TULA in the game-to-go to take the last spot to Regionals.
Metro East Dev Men’s Conferences

This recap was submitted by Killian Hannigan

In one of the most competitive dev sectionals the Metro East has seen in years, no.3 seed SUNY-Buffalo B Grinch upset no.1 seed Connecticut B Grind in the Metro East Dev Conference final 11-10 after a 25 minute universe point. The win marks the first time in nine years that Grinch have made Regionals, and came four years after UConn beat them 13-0 at Grinch’s first Conferences since COVID. The universe point came after UConn clawed their way from a 10-7 deficit to force double game point.

The final point was spectated by well over 100 individuals from teams across the Metro East. The final assist was thrown by Carter “Doors” LaFond, a four-year Grinch veteran and captain, and was caught by Andrew Zhao, a rookie who has found his place on the team’s universe line.

UConn beat SUNY-Binghamton B 9-8 on universe in the semifinals to reach the championship, while Grinch beat Cornell B Shake 8-6 after peeling away two breaks to take a strong lead in a hold-filled game.
