Notes

  • Let’s talk HSNI bids right off the top. Four Rivers (MA) continued their very strong play at the Pioneer Valley Invite and secured a strength bid after reaching the final where they lost to a surging Columbia (NJ) team that has flashed serious strength if also inconsistency this year. There are two bids remaining. As has been discussed in recent Power Rankings editions, evaluating the resumes of the bubble teams is very challenging this year. Haverford (PA) has the strongest overall results but has been losing to Wissahickon (PA): we’re going to let them play it out for a bid this weekend at Pennsylvania States. Meanwhile, Grant (OR) and Franklin (OR) have played some epic games throughout this season. After Grant had a good weekend against everyone but the top ranked teams at Spaghetti Westerns, we’re going to let those teams duke it out for an HSNI spot at Oregon States.
  • Very tough to leave out some teams this year. El Cerrito (CA) just took #1 Albany (CA) down to the wire at California States. But El Cerrito’s loss to Grant proved too costly at the margin. Lone Peak (UT) has looked strong in Utah but had middling results against Midwest teams earlier in the season.
  • OK, let’s talk PVI. As mentioned above, Columbia (NJ) was fantastic this weekend, rolling past the competition with ease. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the poor showing from Brooklyn Tech (NY) — they were playing without a number of starters and focused on playing their depth, a luxury after already earning an HSNI bid. Lexington (MA) has still not looked as strong as they did at the start of the year at the YULA Invite. It was a nice weekend for Middletown (CT), who jumps into the top 25 after carding wins against Lexington and Montpelier.

Notes

  • The HSNI bid situation was more clear in the Girls Division. Four Rivers (MA) earned the autobid by winning PVI, continuing their strong play from recent weeks. And Cambridge Rindge (MA) earned a bid after finishing third with a loss only to Four Rivers, the only team they have lost to this season. More wins over Amherst and Northampton secured them a spot at HSNI. If Cambridge Rindge accepts their bid, a tremendous Girls Division HSNI field is complete!
  • HB Woodlawn (VA) won a competitive Virginia States with a strong win over Madison (VA) in the final. They locked up a bid all the way back at the YULA Invite — they look tuned up for HSNI.
  • El Cerrito (CA) comfortably won a small California States: what’s their ceiling at HSNI?

Looking Ahead

Pennsylvania States is the biggest tournament lined up for this weekend with an HSNI bid at stake for the champion. But there are lots of other state championships lined up, including Maine, New Jersey, New York, and Wisconsin.

Oregon States is next weekend.
