Dartmouth Princess Layout’s two big runs of scoring were enough to fight off a surprising Texas team, 15-9, in the prequarters.

The game was defined by three big runs, two of which belonged to Dartmouth. The first period of Dartmouth domination began with the opening pull, when they charged to a 6-1 lead. Angela Zhu’s throwing and Eva Petzinger’s ability to generate blocks led the way, including a hammer from Zhu to Julianna Werffeli for a score.

“We knew we had to run them,” said Dartmouth coach Eugene Yum.

Texas Melee, the 19th seed, displayed the characteristic resilience that brought them from the fifth seed in Pool C to the prequarters. Down 3-7, they found a way to bring it back to 7-9 by capitalizing on Dartmouth turnovers. Even with a small roster, Melee refused to give in against a deeper and more experienced Princess Layout team.

But Dartmouth salted the game away with a late counter. Piper Curtis continued a big game, adding more goals and Ds to her stat sheet.

The New England winner ended the game on a 6-2 streak. Whatever doubts there may have been – or hope for the continuation of Texas’s improbable run – were erased in a series of Dartmouth winning long points.

“We used team depth to get some fresh legs,” said Dartmouth captain Patty Neckowicz.

Dartmouth will look to use that depth in their quarterfinal matchup against Oregon, a team that they played close but ultimately could not beat Northwest Challenge earlier this year.
