D-I Women’s
All In Alignment
#4 Carleton Syzygy emerged victorious at Northwest Challenge, fending off a pack of challengers–nine of the top ten teams in our power rankings!–to complete an undefeated weekend and win the most prestigious tournament of the regular season. Syzygy took down #5 Colorado Quandary in the final after escaping their toughest challenge of the weekend, a semifinal showdown with #3 Oregon Fugue that went Carleton’s way, 13-11. The other semifinalist were #1 UBC Thunderbirds, who suffered their first loss of the season to Colorado before rebounding and beating Oregon for third place.
The tournament saw upsets from the earliest rounds on Saturday when #13 Michigan Flywheel made a big statement with a win over Oregon, though Fugue would ultimately win the pool on a tiebreaker. #10 UC San Diego Dragon Coalition had #7 Vermont Ruckus on the ropes as well, building a 10-7 lead before Vermont stormed back and won the matchup on double game point.
Bridget Mizener was on the ground reporting for Ultiworld. You can read her Saturday recap here, and be on the lookout for a full tournament report soon. Ultiworld also filmed 15 games from the tournament. Subscribers can access those recordings in our video library.

- Loyola-Chicago Sirens upset Missouri Terror Mizzou 6-4 in the final to win Meltdown. Missouri won their previous five games with a 56-7 scoreline before a windy final did not go their direction.

- Rhode Island Disky Business went undefeated to win the round robin at Get Down to Business.

Looking Ahead

Other events on the schedule include: Sinvite, Northeast Classic, Old Capitol Open, Corny Classic, New England Open, Needle in a Ho Stack, Canyon Classic, and BONANZA.
D-I Men’s
Leave it to the Beavers
#8 Oregon State Beavers won Northwest Challenge with a 15-13 victory over #20 Western Washington Dirt in the final. The Beavers were not perfect on the weekend, losing on universe to both #6 BYU CHI in a showcase game and to UCLA Smaug in pool play, but they won the games that mattered most. Dirt likewise had an up-and-down weekend, losing two pool play games before stringing together a run to the final that originated in the pre-quarter round. Three of the four semifinalists ended up coming from Pool C, with the Victoria Vikes joining OSU and Western Washington. Victoria beat Dirt in pool play, but lost their semifinal matchup. Oregon State beat regional rival #11 Washington Sundodgers in their semifinal. Washington then beat Victoria for third place.
Like in the women’s division, Saturday’s pool play saw a handful of interesting upsets. Virginia Night Train beat the host team Washington to start off the day. UC San Diego Air Squids took down Utah Zion Curtain and Virigina to finish second in Pool B despite coming in as the 14 seed. Victoria notched the key bracket upset, taking down #13 UC Santa Cruz Slugs in quarters before losing a tight semifinal to WWU.

Around the Division
- Ottawa Gee-Gees made their season debut at Salt City Classic, and they did it in style. Ottawa went undefeated without a game closer than five goals.
- Penn State B Love Tap capped off an undefeated weekend with a win over Northeastern C in the final to win Jersey Devil.
- D-III teams took all of the semifinal spots at Meltdown. Northern Iowa AmmUNItion was the highest placing D-I team; they finished in 5th place and lost just a single game over the course of the weekend. The tournament shortened the bracket to just two rounds to avoid an incoming storm, keeping UNI out of championship contention.
- Virginia Tech Burn won the Atlantic Coast Open after an undefeated weekend. Their toughest test came in the semifinals, where they beat UNC Charlotte Skyrise 13-12.
- Alabama-Birmingham Inferno earned the Magic City Invite title with a 14-9 victory in the final over Miami University Vice.
- Boston University Ozone Pilots won the round robin at PBR State Open with a 5-1 record. Their 15-7 victory over second place Bowdoin Clown was effectively the final.
Looking Ahead
Next week wraps up the regular season and it seems like just about every single team in the division is playing next weekend with a whopping 17 tournaments just in the D-I Men’s division. Sixteen of the top 25 teams will take the fields at Easterns, including eight of the top ten. Ultiworld will have full coverage of that tournament.
Just a few hours up the coast, William & Mary Merry Men headline the men’s division at East Coast Invite. In the midwest, Huck Finn typically draws an intriguing crowd.
Other events on the schedule include: Sinvite, Northeast Classic, Old Capitol Open, Corny Classic, New England Open, Ocean State Invite, Needle in a Ho Stack, Fishbowl, Lake Michigan Classic, Free State Classic, King of the Hill, Southwest Showdown, Huckfest, and the Central Florida Classic.
D-III Women’s
As the regular season roars to a close, this week was quite exciting with several ranked teams in action in events across the country.
Around the Division
- Winona State Bad Monaz finished second in the pool and made the semifinals at Meltdown, but lost to eventual champion Loyola-Chicago once there. In windy conditions, the throwing and composure of Greta Baumgartner was a big help.
- #18 Rice Torque beat #7 Colorado College Zenith 14-11 in the pre-quarterfinal round at Centex.
- #14 Williams Nova beat Swarthmore Warmothers 12-10 in the semifinals at Jersey Devil, reversing an 8-6 Swarthmore win in pool play the day before. Williams lost to D-I Brown in the final to finish in 2nd place.
- #25 Richmond Redhots made the final at Atlantic Coast Open but lost to Liberty 13-9.
- #17 Union Jillz and Berry Bucks met in the semifinals of Moxie Madness. Union came away with an 11-3 win, but lost in the final to D-I Ohio.

Looking Ahead
It will be quite the exciting final week in the division. #2 St Olaf Vortex, #4 Wesleyan Vicious Circles, #5 Haverford/Bryn Mawr Sneetches, #15 Mount Holyoke Daisy Chain, and #23 Lehigh Gravity, and will all take the field at East Coast Invite. They each will have at least two matchups among the D-III teams in attendance.
#3 Macalester Pursesnatchers, #9 Davenport Panthers, Winona State Bad Monaz, and Grinnell Grinneleanor Roosevelts are all on the team list for Old Capitol Open. And, of course, there is a division-specific event on the West Coast in Northwest Challenge D3, though that team list has not yet been posted.
D-III Men’s
Despite a lack of D-III specific events on the schedule, there was lots of scattered action around the division this week, including a few head-to-head matchups at D-I tournaments.
Around the Division
- Asbury were the winners at Butler Spring Fling. The debutants won their two documented games by an aggregate 26-5 scoreline and are expected to be at Corny Classic next week to continue their regular season.
- #17 St. Olaf Bezerkers took down Truman State Jujitsu to win Meltdown. With heavy wind and rain expected, Sunday’s bracket was condensed to just two rounds which opened the opportunity for an all-D-III bracket. Kenyon SERF and Winona State Experience were the other semifinalists. Though they came away with the cookie cake trophy, St. Olaf did not finish the weekend undefeated. Kenyon notched a well-deserved victory over the defending champions in pool play.
- #25 Bowdoin Clown finished in second place at the PBR State Open round robin. #15 Bates Orange Whip ended up in the middle of the pack with a 3-3 record on the weekend. Bowdoin beat Bates 10-9 in their matchup. Brandeis TRON finished 4-2 with a win over Bates as well, to muddy up the rankings in the New England region.
- Union Jaxx made the semifinals of Magic City Invite, but lost to D-I’s Miami Vice.
- Dickinson Dumptrucks competed at the largely D-I Atlantic Coast Open. They finished second in their pool and were knocked out of the championship bracket by eventual finalist Appalachian State.
- #12 Rochester Piggies made the final of the Salt City Classic, but lost to D-I Nationals team Ottawa 15-6.
