Women’s Discussion

  • There’s a new #1 and is it undeniable after Scandal put the screws to Fury in the US Open final. Sami Smalling and Kira Flores were revelatory in addition to the starring cutters.
  • Fifth place at the US Open leads to #5 in the rankings! Nightlock’s strong regular season continued, with a pair of wins over Riot to cement their status as a top team.
  • BENT and Flipside both lost to lower seeds – San Diego to Schwa and BENT to 6ixers and Nightlock – at US Open, disappointing showings for teams with semifinal aspirations. They each went down four spots in our Power Rankings.

Men’s Discussion

  • This week’s power rankings provoked significantly more discussion than usual, with almost all mutations of #2-7 presented and defended. Our staff are still not in total agreement, but here’s where they’ve settled.
  • With a run to the final, including wins over PoNY and DiG, Sockeye leap up from outside the top 15 to #3. One can only wonder where they’d be ranked if they had held on universe in the final against Revolver.
  • There was much debate among our ranking staff about where to place Rhino Slam! after their mixed bag of a weekend. How do you account for a team missing as much talent as they were? With arguments for placing Rhino anywhere from #2 through #7, Slam!’s impressive depth won out, and paired with the earlier PEC West win over Revolver, Portland remains in the top two.
  • An early draft of the rankings had Machine at #2 thanks to thorough wins over Revolver and PoNY. But the timing of the wins — beating a Mac Hecht-less Revolver in pool play, defeating PoNY in a seeding crossover game — alongside the lack of a bracket win and Chicago’s own thorough loss to Ring of Fire at PEC East kept Machine at the bottom of the top 5.
  • Haymaker ran through the field at Lehigh Valley Invite, defeating Mad Men 13-11 in the final. In addition to a slight raise for their efforts, Haymaker also move into strength bid territory for the Great Lakes.

Mixed Discussion

  • The mixed division is full of big winners and big drops. Back-to-back national champions Hybrid are back on top after an undefeated run through US Open, collecting slim wins over the next three teams in our Power Rankings, XIST, Slow, and shame. Ann Arbor’s six point victory over XIST in the final thoroughly avenged the earlier PEC East loss.
  • Rally are also way up, jumping into the top 10 after hovering closer to top 20. It was hard to parse the Rally/Toro/Disco Club circle, but Rally’s win over shame. ultimately pulled DC to the top of the pile. shame., despite making the semifinal, only collected two wins on the weekend, over the next ranked teams in Disco Club and Sprocket.
  • Drag’n Thrust failed to collect a win after Friday at US Open, falling 15-7 in back-to-back games against Rally and XIST and then losing by one to Sprocket to round out their weekend. Minneapolis sits just outside strength-bid range in the most recent rankings, though that means little when Drag’n have won the North Central region since 2014.
