D-I Women’s Division Discussion

  • To the victors go the spoils. UBC takes the national crown and the #1 spot, while semifinalists Washington and Vermont move into the top four.
  • Stanford brings up the rear of the quarterfinalists at 8, while Michigan and UC San Diego’s close losses in prequarters see them slot just behind.
  • Pennsylvania may not have made the bracket, but they notched a win over world-beaters Cal Poly SLO and cleaned up in the seventeenth place game to hold seed.
  • Though Georgia went winless at Nationals, two universe point games against Utah and UC Santa Barbara move them firmly ahead of the non-Nationals pack.
  • Undefeated Tufts suffers the biggest drop, incurring book-ending losses to miss semis and drop from the #1 spot.
  • In arguably the shock of the tournament, reigning four-time champs UNC missed the bracket altogether after losing three games on universe. Pleiades’ close losses were still impressive to the committee however, and they slot ahead of two prequarterfinalists at #11.

D-I Men’s Division Discussion

  • Hard to argue Carleton CUT’s undefeated Nationals performance isn’t deserving of the top spot, and fellow finalists Colorado just below. Bucking the trend of the other divisions, however, is UNC, as despite their quarterfinal finish, their only losses of the tournament both came on universe against the finalists.
  • Pool play was full of upsets. This year’s People’s Team, Western Washington blew past their no.18 seed to make quarterfinals. DIRT only lost to semifinalists and upset UC Santa Cruz and Michigan in back-to-back universe points wins.
  • Penn State and Michigan are the biggest upshots across all divisions, rising from the near bottom and bottom of their pools to earn bracket spots. Utah similarly upended Pool A, clinching second in the pool with a universe upset of Oregon State.
  • After missing the bracket on point differential, Oregon State’s backslide continued in the 17th place game, where they lost to Ottawa.
  • Texas’ head-to-head win over WashU in the 13th place game sees them slot just ahead of Contra, who drop after only mustering a win over Ottawa.

D-III Women’s Division Discussion

  • Wesleyan proved in the final that their undefeated-against-D3-teams regular season was no fluke, swapping spots with fellow finalists Haverford/Bryn Mawr.
  • The New England region was the real winner at Nationals, as Middlebury turned it on in the postseason to make the semifinal, while Mt. Holyoke proved you don’t need a regular season to make the bracket.
  • Similar to D-I men’s, Davenport crack into the top four despite not making semis on the back of a universe point loss to Wesleyan, Vicious Circles’ closest contest of the tournament.
  • St. Olaf and Whitman were tough nuts to parse, but Vortex’s resume, which included games against both finalists, moved the committee to push them ahead of the Sweets.
  • Rochester’s budding star Tay Harvey led the EZs to their second bracket appearance in as many Nationals trips, where they were a hair away from a program-best quarterfinals showing. Their universe point win over Carleton in the 9th place bracket cemented their spot in the top 10.
  • Richmond is the big mover of the tournament, resoundingly thumping opponents in the 13th place bracket to hold seed.
  • Last year’s finalists Carleton suffered one of the more disappointing showings, bowing out in prequarters at the hands of a Lewis & Clark team getting hot at the right time.

D-III Men’s Division Discussion

  • The four semifinalists all take their spot at the top of the rankings, with Davenport’s regular season resume beating out Carleton for the #3 spot.
  • Bowdoin’s run to quarters was capped with a universe point win over Wesleyan, whom they move just ahead of. Clown’s showing also makes Williams’ universe point loss in the game-to-go look that much better, pushing the non-Nationals attendees into the top 10.
  • Oklahoma Christian’s upset at the hands of a surging Claremont squad set them up for a universe point prequarter bout with Elon that the Eagles couldn’t pull out. They drop to #11, but the Elon showing proved stronger in the committee’s eyes than Claremont’s loss to Rochester, and the Braineaters’ rise stops at #13.
  • Franciscan and Richmond both went 0-3 in pool play to miss the bracket after making it last year, with both suffering 15-6 losses that drop them down the rankings. Hillsdale also went 0-3, but playing against both finalists and close with Wesleyan is more of a feather in the cap for the tournament’s bottom seed, and moves the Chargers up to #18.
