D-I Men’s Discussion

  • #9 Washington rocketed up the rankings after winning Santa Barbara Invite in impressive fashion. The skills they displayed on the weekend and their performance merited a 12 spot bump to make them the newest top 10 team. The team they beat in the final, #11 Colorado State, dropped three spots.
  • Fellow Northwest teams #14 Western Washington and #22 Victoria entered the rankings after their SBI showings. The pair finished 4th and 5th after entering the weekend as the 14th and 7th seeds, respectively. Easy to see why they moved up the rankings.
  • #15 Cal Poly SLO did not put their best foot forward in Santa Barbara, going 6-3 while taking losses to Utah and Western Washington. They dropped three spots this week. There are lofty expectations for them, but they’ll need to get healthier if they want to live up to them.
  • #21 Southern California got on the radar last year with their showing at Southwest Regionals, and join the rankings for the first time in program history. They played tight with top teams all weekend long at SBI on their way to a 5-3 tournament.
  • The three lowest ranked teams last week–LSU, Cincinnati, and Georgia–were all knocked out by the wave of newcomers. A number of inactive teams also dropped down 2-4 spots to make room.

D-I Women’s Discussion

  • #15 California tumbled eight spots going 4-2 at Santa Barbara Invite, including losses to Vermont and UC San Diego. Perhaps more concerning were some relatively narrow victories along the way, and a lack of depth for a team that had some thinking semifinals.
  • Entering the ranking with a bang was #12 Vermont, who sparkled in Santa Barbara on their way to an appearance in the final. Their 5-1 performance and impressive athleticism made them this week’s big winner.
  • Wrapping up the moves from SBI is UC Santa Barbara’s appearance at #21. It’s been a while since they’ve been nationally relevant, but the veteran unit leading the Burning Skirts helped lead them to an impressive 5th place finish.
  • The final big mover is #24 UNC Wilmington, who entered the rankings following an undefeated win at Winta Binta Vinta Fest, including destroying Virginia and Duke in their semifinal and final, respectively.
  • With three new additions, three teams had to go: UCLA and Virginia both may be rebuilding, while Georgia was simply the last team in.

D-III Men’s Discussion

  • #5 Davidson was the only team in action, and with the second day of Joint Summit rained out, didn’t do anything to warrant a move. The rankings remained as they were.

D-III Women’s Discussion

  • #22 Portland UPRoar got off to a slow start at Flat Tail Women’s, and dropped 13 spots in the rankings. They finished the tournament in last place after losing to D-I Portland State, 11-10, in consolation play.
  • #17 Truman State is another team that took a tumble this week, dropping ten spots after it became unlikely that star Emilie Willingham would be able to compete this season. Without her gravity, TSUnami will struggle to continue their run as one of the elite programs in the division.
  • #5 Puget Sound skipped ahead of #6 Bowdoin after a strong start to their season at Flat Tail Women’s. The wins weren’t dominant and they struggled a little against D-I competition, but their 4th place finish was enough to demonstrate that UPS has the talent to be a top D-III team.
  • The only new team to the rankings this week is #20 Lewis & Clark Artemis. They went 3-3 at Flat Tail, breaking seed to finish 5th. Their arrival knocked out Oberlin from the #25 spot.
